Dying Light Review

Oh, Dying Light, how I love you. I love the way you let me leap across rooftops and climb tall towers like an acrobat with endless supplies of energy. I love how I can dropkick a zombie and watch its flailing body knock over others like a fleshy bowling ball. I love looking over my shoulder as I run through the darkness, only to see a crowd of undead sprinting towards me, growling hideously and baring their ghastly teeth.

But oh, Dying Light, how you irritate me. I hate you for the gunners that ambushed me as I swam underwater, because there was no way to know how to react until I emerged and discovered that I wasn't meant to peek my head out--not yet. I hate you for that time you filled the screen with so much haze and bloom during a boss fight that I couldn't see properly. I hate that sequence when you made me leap from one pole to another, because you made it hard to get a good look at my surroundings, and your button prompts are hardly generous. And I hate these moments most because your systems are strong enough to let the open-world gameplay do the heavy lifting. The harder you try to direct the action, the weaker you become.

Fight or flee? It's a decision as old as humanity itself.

If you count yourself among the Dead Island fandom, your expectations are already set. You understand developer Techland's inconsistencies, and you are prepared to disregard the chaff so that you may reap the grain. Dying Light spawns from the same pile of mutated freaks as Dead Island, but it establishes its separate identity early on. The first difference to become clear is in tone: where Dead Island's story was difficult to take seriously, Dying Light sets the stage for a dark drama with a city overrun with infected victims, and a desperate populace anxious for hospice and aid. There are light touches here and there: you stumble upon The Bites Motel, for instance, and magazine covers and other details offer plenty of sight gags. But you are meant to be fearful and cautious, and you are meant to empathize with the survivors working so hard just to stay alive, let alone thrive.

As a covert operative sent to the city of Harran to recover a secret file, you find yourself in over your head, playing triple agent as you run errands for the city's two primary factions while radioing information to your agency's head honcho. Death is always in the air, not just because the infected have overrun the city's two sizable explorable areas, but because the survivors are so weary, so close to defeat. Dying Light lumbers through one cliche after another, but it's perfectly palatable: expressive faces and decent voice acting make the story beats and cutscenes worth paying attention to, even when the specifics--the antihero with a heart of gold, the doctor close to discovering a cure, the power-hungry villain--fall solidly within been-there, done-that territory.

In the dark--but never alone.

Dying Light also sets itself apart with its parkour system, which sees you running across the city from a first-person perspective. It takes a short while to get used to climbing onto ledges, which requires you to be looking at them in the proper way. But then it's off to the races, and you're running across rooftops and sneering at the zombies below, most of which can't handle the climb. Rushing through the open world this way is terrific, due to solid (if not quite excellent) controls and well-constructed climbing and leaping paths, particularly in the game's second half, which takes place in the city's vertically-minded old town. Even better, the parkour energizes moments of great tension. Far Cry comparisons are easy, given how you unlock a few of the game's safe houses by climbing tall towers. But the climbing requires more finesse and situational awareness than it does in Far Cry 4, and some of the towers are outrageously tall, making the entire endeavor an anxious exercise in precision.

And tension is yet another aspect of Dying Light that sets it apart from its zombie-game peers. When night falls, particularly dangerous and fast zombies roam the city, and the entire timbre changes. It's best to circumvent the vision cones of those baddies and avoid direct confrontation, but you're occasionally mobbed in spite of your careful movement. These undead are more persistent than the Liberty City police department, so the best option is to run, run, run until you lose them. You can hold a button to look behind you and see how close they are, and doing so can be startling when you see the incoming horde. It's been some time since a zombie game legitimately scared me, but that look-behind-you move reveals some creepy sights. During the day, you scamper around and, occasionally, confront your infected fears. Once the sun has set, you slink and sprint, trying not to catch the deadly eyes of nearby volatiles.

Burn, beautiful zombies, burn.

Throw in a three-pronged upgrade system that makes you stronger and more agile as the game progresses, and you have the foundation of a great game. Alas, Dying Light flounders too often for it to achieve greatness, though it's poised to develop the same cult following that so many Techland games do. This is a surprisingly long game stuffed with, well, stuff, yet your role for too many hours is to play errand boy--a role so demeaning that even lead character Kyle Crane remarks upon it. Go flip a switch. Go collect crayons, or mushrooms, or coffee. As the first act draws to a close, Dying Light has taken a turn for the worse: each time the game grants you structure, it struggles, to the point where you might wish the gofer quests would return, because the ones that have taken their place are either frustrating slogs, or simply bad ideas.

The slog arises because these simple tasks require you to cover a lot of real estate. As fun as it is to move through Harran, the parkour doesn't carry the game alone. The other problem with Dying Light's first half, as dumb as it may sound, is the zombie crowd itself, which is not powerful enough to provide a huge challenge, but is too powerful to wholly ignore. The undead become annoyances--children that wave their arms around and demand attention while the game asks you to once again take to the streets so you can pull a lever.

Firearms are powerful, but it's best to use them against human foes.

The bad arrives when Dying Light embraces ideas that have an air of cleverness, but have you crying out "what were you thinking?" as implemented. There is the time you quaff a potion intended to temporarily disguise you from the undead, but it reverses your movement controls. And so death might very well ensue depending on when you drink and how quickly you adjust to the surprise. There is the time you descend on a zip line and let the game drop you at the very end of it, only to take a good amount of fall damage. There's a garbage pile a few feet before the end that you can leap into, but the limited field of view when ziplining, and the general visual bleariness, mean you probably won't know it's there until you've lost half of your health bar, and you're cursing Techland for not noticing how these elements don't quite work together--or worse, for not caring.

These are just a few examples of the frustrations that set in. Once the second act arrives and you enter old town, however, there's a moment of revelation when you gaze upon the district and take in its beauty. The slog has been set aside, and excitement for new navigation blossoms. Depending on how you spend the skill points you earn, you gain access to a grappling hook that provides so much stimulation that you wish you'd gained access to it even earlier. Then again, Dying Light gets occasionally lost in "ideas" even in the second half--shooting segments that lack tightness, confrontations with multiple kinds of big baddies that have you flying backwards and getting poisoned simultaneously, and so forth. You've got the tools to succeed, at least, even when the fun meter drops: upgradable weapons starting with knives and baseball bats and working up to machetes and ice picks, along with throwables like grenades and molotov cocktails. Those weapons degrade quickly, but there are more of them scattered around than you will ever need.

When night falls, particularly dangerous and fast zombies roam the city, and the entire timbre changes.

Dying Light succeeds when it remains confident in its systems. The combat isn't as fulfilling as it is in Dead Island--you won't be breaking any arms--but out in that wild world, you aren't meant to wade into the horde anyhow. What drives the action is the promise of discovery and self-improvement. There are locks to pick and supplies to nab before the opposing faction gets to them. The balconies harbor new people to meet, who share their stories if you stick around long enough to hear them. When a zombie or six draw near, you swipe, kick, and bash until the blood is flying and the grunts are silenced, and you can return to your pillaging. Dying Light most often approaches greatness when it allows you to improvise your own tune instead of clumsily trying to conduct the entire orchestra.

That a game of such wild fluctuations can still give rise to so much fun speaks well of its high points. Those peaks rise even higher when other players are involved, and you have a few friends (up to three) join you, distracting the speedy virals while you take care of a ground-pounding beast swinging his giant hammer around. Competitive zombie invasions are liable to have you tensing your muscles even further invasions when they turn the game into a nighttime arena. This is Be the Zombie mode, and while using your tentacle to grapple your way around as a zombie is enjoyable, it is the tension you feel as a hunted human that makes these moments stand out. You can tweak your setting to allow or disallow these sudden multiplayer matches, and there's no shame in wanting to explore without distraction. But if Dying Light's nighttime pressures appeal to you, allowing zombie attacks further extends that drama.

I am rooting for Dying Light's success, even as I shake my head at its avoidable foibles. I understand it, I get it, and so I find pleasure in it even as it disappoints me, even when I land between a fence and a rocky cliff and get stuck there, even when I don't grab a ledge or pole after a jump for reasons that I can't quite understand. My dearest Dying Light, I am so grateful for your specialness, for it shines through even when I am prepared to damn you to hell.

Dead or Alive 5 Last Round Delayed, But Still No Online Multiplayer at Launch

Team Ninja's fighting game Dead or Alive 5 Last Round has been delayed on PC by more than a month, but it's online modes still won't be ready by launch, publisher Koei Tecmo has announced.

The game, which was originally slated to launch via Steam on February 17, has been pushed back to March 30.

"In appreciation for your patience, we'll be offering the Halloween 2013 Set (28 costumes) free of charge to all users who purchase Dead or Alive 5 Last Round on Steam," Koei Tecmo said, explaining that it pushed the game back in order to provide players with "the best experience possible."

However, this doesn't change Tecmo Koei's previous statement from back in December 2014 that the game will not have any of its online modes at launch. As the publisher said then "Online modes for Dead or Alive 5 Last Round will be added in a patch within 3 months of release."

Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja previously announced that Dead or Alive 5: Last Round will launch across Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 in North America on February 17, 2015. The game launches three days later on February 20 in Europe.

In-Flight VR Coming to Australian Airline

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 30 Januari 2015 | 21.50

Australian airline Qantas has announced a partnership with Samsung to bring the technology company's Gear VR headsets to the cabin, beginning with a trial run for first-class fliers starting next month.

As part of the test run, Gear VR headsets will be available to Qantas fliers in the Sydney and Melbourne International Airport first-class lounges, and also in first-class on select A380 flights from Australia to Los Angeles.

Qantas points out that it is the only airline anywhere to offer in-flight VR.

This trial run will span three months, and Qantas will seek fliers' feedback to see if offering VR to customers is something the company wants to take on in a larger, more official capacity.

"This technology gives us a completely new way to connect with our customers," Qantas marketing executive Olivia Wirth said.

Some of the Qantas VR experiences will include virtual tours of the company's new first-class lounges at Los Angeles Airport, as well as a VR simulation of landing. Other in-flight entertainment options will include movies and audio experiences.

Qantas will also use the Gear VR headset to let passengers take virtual trips to one of the airline's other destinations, which they say should inspire travel and promote tourism.

It's already happening. Qantas points out that Australian company Tourism NT has already partnered with the airline to create a 3D VR experience for Kakadu National Park that will be shown to fliers.

The Gear VR headsets will be available on select Qantas flights for first-class passengers beginning in mid-February, with another rollout in March for trips between Australia and Los Angeles.

For long-haul flights such as the trip between Australia and LA, it's not hard to see the appeal of being able to totally block out other passengers and virtually escape for a while. And for Qantas, letting travelers virtually experience other destinations instead of just looking at a tourism brochure seems like it could have some upside for ticket sales.

Samsung's Gear VR headset launched in December, and is available now for $200 through an "Innovator Edition." The device requires a Note 4 to function as the screen.

Game Dev Bets Big With This Super Bowl Ad

As it turns out, Bud Light's Pac-Man commercial won't be the only video game-related ad shown during this weekend's Super Bowl XLIX between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks.

Boutique game developer uCool has announced that it will air a 15-second commercial for its mobile card game Heroes Charge during the big game. You can watch the ad above.

uCool apparently submitted its ad to Super Bowl broadcaster NBC late in the game, so the network has not yet said during which quarter the ad will air.

This year's Super Bowl is expected to draw more than 100 million views. uCool's marketing officer Tony Cerrato said the opportunity to showcase the game on such a wide scale was too big a chance to pass up, even if ad rates are $4.5 million for 30 seconds.

"Players seem to love our game," Cerrato told AdWeek. "We're getting good responses from that, and we figured that by going on to a bigger venue like the Super Bowl, it should be successful."

uCool's other properties include PC games such as Tynon, Evony, and Commanders of Evony. Heroes Charge, released in October 2014, is the company's first mobile game.

Free Evolve Companion App Transfers Experience to Main Game

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 29 Januari 2015 | 21.50

2K Games today announced the release of Evolve: Hunters Quest, the companion app to its upcoming shooter Evolve. The app is available for free download on iOS, Android, Windows, and Amazon Fire devices.

Evolve: Hunters Quest is a puzzle combat game that requires players to match three tokens of the same colour in order to unleash attacks on enemies, fill up energy bars to activate special Hunter abilities, and earn mastery points to level up. Mastery points earned in-app can then be applied to characters in the main Evolve game on any platform. Players who download the app can also unlock unique game art and watch replays of online matches from a top-down view.

Devices running iOS which are compatible with the app include iPad 2, iPad mini, iPhone 4s, iPod 5 and up. Earlier generations of these devices will not be able to run the game.

Several paid DLC packs have already been announced for Evolve, a decision which developer Turtle Rock has defended against backlash. The recently concluded beta testing phase for Xbox One saw 2.2 million games played. Evolve will be released on February 10 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Watch Out! NBA 2K15 Hiding Major Game of Thrones Spoiler

One NBA 2K15 player recently logged into the professional basketball game to find something he most definitely didn't expect: a major spoiler about HBO's Game of Thrones.

Writing on Reddit, a user going by the name "Mister_Big" explains that he encountered the huge season four spoiler (see the spoiler-y image below) inside the game's MyGM mode.

"Definitely didn't expect to see a major GoT spoiler while playing NBA 2K15...," he says.

The spoilers didn't stop there, however, as Mister_Big also claims that not long after he encountered the Game of Thrones spoiler, he came across another one, this one about Fox's 24.

"I had a similar situation right after this where the player made a reference to Jack Bauer from 24," he said.

That NBA 2K15 developer 2K Sports would weave pop culture references into its game isn't all that surprising. After all, players probably do talk about Game of Thrones and 24 in their daily lives, something 2K may want to replicate to create an even more true-to-life video game.

However, if you haven't seen Game of Thrones or 24, you may want to be extra careful the next time you play NBA 2K15. We've followed up with 2K Sports, asking for more information about the spoilers.

Smash Bros Wii U Update Offers 15 New Stages for 8-Player Mode

A new update to Super Smash Bros for Wii U has expanded the game's 8-person multiplayer mode with 15 new stages to play on.

These levels, which are enlarged and tweaked versions of the standard levels, have been balanced to accommodate for the heightened intensity of eight combatants playing at the same time. For example, hazards such as Shy Guys racing past in the Mario Kart level are not present in the 8-player version.

Smash Bros Wii U's 1.0.2 update also delivers a few minor gameplay balance and tweaks, none of which were outlined by Nintendo, suggesting that they are fairly subtle changes.

The 15 new levels are split between nine in their "Normal" form and six "Omega" stages.

Standard

  • Mario Circuit (Brawl)
  • Pyrosphere
  • Norfair
  • Luigi's Mansion
  • Lylat Cruise
  • Pokémon Stadium 2
  • Town and City
  • Smashville
  • Wii Fit Studio

Omega

  • Mario Galaxy
  • Mario Circuit (Brawl)
  • The Great Cave Offensive
  • Lylat Cruise
  • Pokémon Stadium 2
  • Animal Crossing: Town and City

Meanwhile, the game's director Masahiro Sakurai has once again hinted that the combined project of Smash Bros for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS has been such an exertion that he is unsure if he'll make another.

Masahiro Sakurai has directed all Smash games, including the 1999 original on N64.

In his bi-weekly Famitsu column (translated by Kotaku staff), Sakurai was quoted as saying:"It was very tough this time around... I doubt I'll be able to go on making games if it continues like this. But, I consider myself lucky that so many people seem to enjoy [Smash Bros.]"

These comments closely follow an interview published in December where Sakurai again stated that he was unsure about developing the next Smash Bros.

Super Smash Bros for Wii U has sold more than 3.4 million units since its release, meaning that about a third of all Wii U owners have purchased the title.

GameSpot's Super Smash Bros for Wii U review was glowing, summarizing: "With the Wii U release, Smash Bros. has fully realized its goals. There's something here for nearly everyone--from young to old, from novice to expert--presented almost without compromise. Super Smash Bros. Wii U invites everyone to join in its undiluted, joyous celebration of the broad community that Nintendo has built over the past forty years."

Wii U Sales Climb Slowly Despite Key Releases

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 28 Januari 2015 | 21.50

Nintendo managed to sell 3 million Wii U consoles worldwide during the final nine months of 2014, marking only a slight increase from the 2.4 million sold in the same period of 2013.

The new figures bring the Wii U's total lifetime sales to 9.2 million, an indication that, despite key releases such as Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros for Wii U, Nintendo is still struggling to push forward with its troubled system.

By comparison, the original Wii had surpassed 44 million sales worldwide after its third Christmas on the market. Sony's PlayStation 4 passed 18.5 million by its second Christmas, and although Microsoft hasn't recently revealed detailed sales numbers, it had shipped 10 million Xbox Ones worldwide before December.

More than half of Wii U owners have bought Mario Kart 8

However, the tie-ratios for key Wii U games are strong. Mario Kart 8 has sold 4.8 million units, meaning more than half of Wii U owners have purchased the game. Meanwhile, Super Smash Bros for Wii U managed to sell 3.4 million units.

Nintendo 3DS sales fell significantly during the nine-month period, due in part to gamers in Europe and North America awaiting the release of the New Nintendo 3DS model. In total, some 7 million 3DS units shipped worldwide during the three quarters, down from the 11.6 million sold during the same period last year.

Of that number, sales of the New Nintendo 3DS in Japan--which launched in October--accounted for 1.8 million (0.6m for the smaller model, 1.2 for the XL). Despite slower sales, the handheld nevertheless passed a key lifetime sales milestone of 50 million units.

Key 3DS software performed handsomely, with Pokémon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire selling 9.35 million units, and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS hitting 6.19 million.

The combined performance of the 3DS and Wii U, along with its software, is expected to pull Nintendo out of an annual loss for the first time since 2010. Total sales for the year are revised down slightly, by 7 percent, to $4.7 billion, while profit expected to reach $505 million, compared to the $200 million loss last year.

3DS Browser Exploit Allows Users to Play Game Boy Color ROMs

A Nintendo 3DS loophole is allowing customers to play Game Boy Color ROMs on Nintendo's new hardware.

To activate the loophole, users need to purchase a legitimate Game Boy Color game via the eShop, and then suspend the software and open up the handheld's internet browser. At this point, if users then download a Game Boy Color ROM it can be played on the handheld. However, in most countries this action likely violates copyright law.

According to Nintendo Life, the workaround works right up to the current firmware version (9.0-9.4), but those who own a New Nintendo 3DS will not be able to create the same exploit.

In all likelihood the loophole will be closed with a future system software update.

A 3DS software update, released in December, managed to block a backdoor hack that allowed users to play unlicensed games on the handheld.

As Ubisoft Axes "Stolen" Origin Keys, Reseller Denies Blame

New light has been shed on Ubisoft's crackdown of grey market PC game codes, with the publisher revealing that the games it has deactivated were purchased with fraudulent credit card information.

On Tuesday it emerged that the publisher had begun blocking access to some of its PC games, such as Far Cry 4 and Assassin's Creed Unity, having discovered they were not acquired through official channels. Consumers raised complaints about their games being deactivated on a Ubisoft forum, but the publisher insists this is a legal matter.

Now it emerges that some, or perhaps all, of the game codes in question were bought from EA's Origin store using fraudulent credit card information.

EA is co-operating with Ubisoft and has temporarily removed the games from Origin. Meanwhile, the reseller website believed to have sold these codes online has denied responsibility.

In a statement sent to GameSpot, Ubisoft said: "We have confirmed activation keys were recently purchased from EA's Origin store using fraudulent credit card information and then resold online. These keys may have been deactivated. We strongly recommend that players purchase keys and downloadable games only from the Uplay Store or their trusted retailers."

EA, in turn, has notified customers that "a number of activation keys for Ubisoft products were purchased from Origin using fraudulent credit cards, and then resold online. We identified the unauthorized keys and notified Ubisoft."

It added: "We removed Ubisoft games from Origin to protect against further fraudulent purchases. We don't have an update [for when the games will return], but are working to get them back in the store as soon as possible."

"Not in Any Way Responsible"

Following this clampdown on fraudulent keys, the online vendor now in the spotlight has insisted it is not directly linked to the illegal purchase.

"As some of you may already know, steps have been taken to remove games purchased indirectly from a publisher, via main marketplaces in the web.

"G2A is not in any case responsible for any of these procedures," the corporation wrote in a statement.

The vendor said it "will do everything possible to compensate" for those who have bought the fraudulently purchased keys.

It added: "G2A will make every possible exertion to prevent this kind of procedures in the future and exclude merchants responsible for such incidents from the marketplace."

EA Will Give Star Wars: Battlefront a Battlefield-Sized Push

During this week's Electronic Arts earnings call, CFO Blake Jorgensen talked more about the upcoming Star Wars: Battlefront game, which is in development at Battlefield series studio DICE.

Jorgensen confirmed that the shooter is due to launch before Christmas 2015. More specifically, the game aims to be "aligned with" Star Wars Episode VII -- The Force Awakens, which arrives on December 18, he said.

DICE's new Star Wars: Battlefront is not directly based on the upcoming movie from J.J. Abrams, though it will share some general universe themes, characters, and items. In previous teaser trailers and images, DICE has revealed that the game will take players to locations such as Hoth and Endor, and feature vehicles such as AT-ATs and speeder bikes, among other things.

About the game in general, Jorgensen said DICE will share more about the project in the coming months. He went on to say that Battlefront's launch this year will be a "very large activity" for EA overall, on level with the company's blockbuster Battlefield series.

"We're extremely excited about that," Jorgensen said about Battlefront. "We think there's huge potential for that title. More to come in the next couple of months on that as more about the movie comes out as well as more about our title comes out. You should consider that a very large activity for us [this year] and a very large focus--similar to how we've thought about Battlefields in the past."

Battlefront is not the only new Star Wars game EA is currently working on. The developer's Visceral Games studio is also producing an entry in the series, rumored to be an open-world game. EA has even hired longtime Naughty Dog creative director Amy Hennig to work on the title.

EA and Star Wars franchise owner Disney signed a ten-year, multi-title deal in 2013 that makes the Mass Effect publisher the exclusive creator of new Star Wars games.

Check Out These 24 Karat Gold Xbox One And PS4 Controllers

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 26 Januari 2015 | 21.50

Not to be outdone by the gold-plated Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles we heard about last year, the team at ColorWare (via Kotaku) recently released 24 Karat gold Xbox One and PS4 controllers.

The extremely limited batch of gold-plated controllers--only 25 of each were made--have already sold out. They went for $300 apiece.

"The extraordinary new controllers undergo a complex process to achieve a rich, glossy finish. These products look amazing and have outstanding ergonomics," ColorWare writes about them.

There's no word yet on if ColorWare will replenish stock.

At least we can look at some images of the controllers, which are either amazing or silly--I can't decide. Check out the gallery below to see some pictures, and be sure to click each image for a full-size version.

Planetside 2 Sets Guinness World Record After 1,158 People Battle At Once

Sony Online Entertainment announced Monday that its free-to-play MMOFPS Planetside 2 has set a new Guinness World Records title for "Most players online in a single FPS battle."

The record was achieved on January 24 when SOE partnered with PlanetSideBattles for a massive in-game war between all three Planetside 2 Empires. In all, 1,158 players simultaneously duked it out in one instance on the game's Jaeger competitive server.

The previous world record holder was the game Man vs. Machine, which in 2012 saw 999 people simultaneously compete. According to Planetside 2 producer David Carey, the first Planetside actually held the original record for most players online in a single FPS battle.

"We're thrilled to have officially taken it back with PlanetSide 2," Carey said. "It's truly the players that define the game and we'd like to extend a BIG congratulations to our players for reaching such an accomplishment nearly every night, as well as thank them for making PlanetSide 2 exactly the type of experience it was meant to be."

Planetside 2 is available today on PC, while the PlayStation 4 version recently entered a closed beta testing period ahead of its public release.

GS News Top 5 - Hatred Gets Adults Only Rating; Destiny Levelling Hack!

I would use the Microsoft Hololens. This could be a great new way to play games, especially ones with a top-down perspective. Imagine playing Diablo 3 in a dark basement or maybe even outdoors at night for a more immersive experience. Horror games might become painfully scary with this or VR technology. Seeing creepy things coming out from behind the real trees in your environment could be terrifying :0

Of course it may be incredible for learning experiences and work environments, but that isn't quite as fun :P

Elder Scrolls Online Drops Subscription Requirement: Wednesday also brought us word that Bethesda's online entry in the beloved RPG series is doing away with its mandatory paid subscription. We also learned that the game will launch June 9 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, also with the new business model.

The Other Stuff (Stories We Like, But Didn't Cover With a Standalone Post):

A new trailer for tennis star Bjorn Borg's (yes, the tennis star Bjorn Borg) indie game First-Person Lover parodies Apple's famous keynote addresses, and does it quite well. Check out the trailer above.

Downloadable racing game Trials Fusion now has online multiplayer. A free update released this week introduced the new feature, which supports up to eight players across three multiplayer modes. Publisher Ubisoft also revealed that the game's fourth--and largest--DLC pack to date, called Fire in Deep, will launch on January 27.

Interested in Bandai Namco's free-to-play fighting game Rise of Incarnates? Here's some good news. The publisher announced this week that the game will launch through Steam Early Access on February 4, which is now just two weeks away.

Good news for people looking to pick up Mad Catz's M.O.J.O. micro-console, as the company announced this week that, effective immediately, the device has dropped down to $150.

Following its initial launch for PC about two years ago, Sony Online Entertainment's free-to-play shooter Planetside 2 came to PlayStation 4 this week through a closed beta. If you weren't invited in already, no need to worry, as SOE plans to ramp up the scale of the beta over time. You can sign up for a chance to get in at the Planetside 2 website right now.

Ubisoft released new Assassin's Creed Unity DLC this week int he form of the "Secrets of the Revolution" expansion pack. It feature three new missions, 9 more weapons, and 5 addition pieces of gear. Also, you'll "discover the secrets of the French Revolution." Get it today for $7.

The 12th Annual Games for Change Festival, which aims to "catalyze social impact through digital games," will take place April 21-23 in New York City, organizers announced this week. Keynote presentations will be given by people like filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, Oculus VR chief scientist Michael Abrash, Vlambeer's Rami Ismail, and NYU Game Center director Frank Lantz.

Looking for the latest news about Borderlands developer Gearbox Software's Homeworld Remastered Collection? If so, you'll want to tune in to the Inside Gearbox Software panel at 10:30 am Central Time on Sunday, January 25 (stream it on Twitch.tv/PAX). There, Gearbox will make an "exciting announcement," though that's all we have to go on for now.

Wow, this is great. Here's a Destiny video that spoofs Disney's classic Aladdin song "A Whole New World" by changing up the lyrics to make it "A Whole New Raid." Enjoy.

World-famous soccer club Manchester United now has an official games partner. The organization on Tuesday announced a multi-year deal with KamaGames to make the company the "official Social Games partner of the Club." The partnership will see KamaGames release a new line of casino games that will carry the Manchester United branding, logo, imagery, and themes.

Do you enjoy Total War? What about reading? If you answered "yes" to both, I have something for you. You can now read the first three chapters of the latest Total War novel, The Sword of Attila, for free. Ninja Theory's excellent adventure game Enslaved: Odyssey to the West could never happen in 2015, according to project lead Dominic Matthews. "Games like Enslaved--trying to get a game like that signed now would be impossible," he says in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz. "The way that it was signed, there would be too much pressure for it to be...to have the whole feature set that justifies a $60 price-tag."

From the GameOverGreggy show comes this great video of prolific voice actor Troy Baker doing some excellent impressions, including a spot-on one of Christopher Walken. Watch and enjoy!

If you have a Wii U and haven't played Scram Kitty, shame on you! It's a really interesting mix of puzzles and traditional shooting mechanics, plus kittehs! Anyway, if you don't have a Wii U, you still might be in luck, as an enhanced version--called Scram Kitty DX--is coming to PS4 and PS Vita!

All Battlefield Hardline Maps and Modes Revealed

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 23 Januari 2015 | 21.50

Developer Visceral Games has updated the Battlefield Hardline website with the full list of all multiplayer maps and modes for the upcoming shooter, which launches for consoles and PC in March.

The nine maps and seven modes are listed below (with descriptions courtesy of Visceral) , while you can also see images of all the multiplayer environments in the galleries below.

Battlefield Hardline launches March 17 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. An open beta for all platforms is scheduled to begin soon.

Battlefield Hardline Maps:

  • The Block -- "What looks like a liquor store and bail bonds office, is actually a front. This is home to a notorious criminal ring. The police know better than to enter The Block without backup."
  • Dust Bowl -- "The small desert town of Joad is off the beaten path and well-known for meth trafficking problems. The cops have had enough and are on the scene to shut it all down."
  • Hollywood Heights -- "A mansion high in the Hollywood Hills looks ripe for a little crime. The criminals have started a wildfire in the nearby hills to distract the police. Do you think that'll work?"
  • Growhouse -- "The cops located an illegal underground marijuana grow operation. The cops are raiding the place, but the criminals aren't going down without a fight. After all, this is precious cargo for them."
  • Derailed -- "The industrial side of Los Angeles is home to many shady dealings. A criminal ring has set up shop in the warehouses and scrapyards, where they're trying to make that money from illegal doings."
  • Riptide -- "A drug smuggler's haven, this high-tech and expensive island crib is being ransacked by the police. A chain of small islands is connected by bridges and waterways, providing multiple access to it."
  • Everglades -- "Florida is not all sand and beaches. Deep in the heart of the Everglades, a fracking site has turned into a battle playground as the cops and criminals wage war against each other."
  • Downtown -- "The heart of downtown Los Angeles is a jumping environment--the streets, the buildings, the cars--are all open to criminal deeds. The police have shut down the city center, and a heated confrontation is about to break out."
  • Bank Job -- "Money is the root of all evil. The criminals are plotting a ruthless assault on a high-security bank vault. But, they messed up and triggered a silent alarm and the police are jamming to the scene of the crime."

Battlefield Hardline Modes:

  • Conquest -- "A Battlefield staple, Conquest is based on the idea of controlling a base. Capture a base by standing near a flag on foot, in a vehicle or in the skies--if your team owns more flags than the enemy you'll slowly reduce their tickets, which are their ability to respawn. The first team to run out of tickets loses."
  • Team Deathmatch -- "Team Deathmatch is infantry only and has the easiest objective to understand: shoot the enemy team more than they shoot you."
  • Heist -- "Heist is all about pulling off that big job or that perfect score. The criminals are trying to infiltrate a cash-filled vault, and the cops must regulate them. Once the criminals break in, they have to nab two bags of cash and jam out with them back to each of the two base points."
  • Blood Money -- "A huge pile of loot has been intercepted in transit. The criminals are fighting to steal the money, while the cops are trying to secure it as evidence. Each team is trying to secure the money in their team's vault--but it's not safe there. Raid the enemy team's vault to help your team score the most money."
  • Hotwire -- "The criminals are trying to steal a list of marked cars while the cops are trying to repossess them. Use your driving skills to catch up with the enemy, and bring a friend riding shotgun to take them down."
  • Rescue -- "Rescue is one of two competitive modes. This is a cop-centric mode that lets you step into the boots of a SWAT operative tasked with saving innocent lives from the hands of criminals. Lead your team carefully into dangerous environments and get the hostages back to safety. Be careful though, because there are no second chances in this mode."
  • Crosshair -- "This is the second competitive mode. In Crosshair, a former criminal turned state's witness is on the run from his former crew. The criminals are trying to erase the VIP's face from the world, while the cops are trying to get him out safely. Once again, there are no second chances – one death and you are out for the match."
