Surgeon Simulator dev squashes Half-Life 3 rumors

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 28 Juni 2013 | 21.50

Bossa Studios has confirmed that the easter egg recently discovered in Surgeon Simulator 2013 is not a tease for Half-Life 3.

"Whoa! It seems that you've got a little ahead of yourselves! Here's a clue: THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY VALVE GAMES! Carry on now…," the developer wrote on Twitter today.

Gamers this week discovered a note taped to an object with Korean text inside Surgeon Simulator 2013. The text reportedly reads "The time is," with dots said to be in reference to planets within the solar system.

"The time is 8:47 a.m." is one of the first lines in the original Half-Life.

The discovery was made following the Team Fortress 2 update for Surgeon Simulator 2013. The free update allows gamers to play as Team Fortress 2's medic and operate on the heavy.

Last April, Valve boss Gabe Newell said the studio had gone through numerous "twists and turns" to bring the game to market. He explained that Valve remaining silent on the game is in the best interest for gamers because elaborating on the game's development "would probably drive people more crazy."

The most recent Half-Life game was 2007's Half-Life 2: Episode Two. That game advances the story of previous entries Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode One. A third episode was planned, but has not seen the light of day.

A listing for Half-Life 3 was recently spotted in a Valve project tracker.

EA: Mirror's Edge sequel will "reach a bigger group of people"

The original Mirror's Edge was a fairly niche game, but its open-world sequel aims to cast a wider net. That's according to EA Labels president Frank Gibeau, who told IGN that the pieces are place for the free-running sequel to grow the franchise's audience.

"Our goal in any product is to try and grow the audience," Gibeau explained. "We're definitely taking into account the opportunity to reach a bigger group of people. We think we've got the right story and accessibility that can do that."

Gibeau added that the original Mirror's Edge sold a couple million units, so it's "not an art film." Still, he said the franchise has the opportunity to grow with the upcoming sequel.

The Mirror's Edge sequel was announced during EA's E3 briefing earlier this month. Little is known about its gameplay outside of Gibeau describing the game as an "open-world action adventure game."

The game is currently in development for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. According to developer DICE, it will be released "when it's ready."

Minecraft Xbox 360 sells 7 million

Console version of open-ended sandbox game reaches new sales milestone.

The Xbox 360 version of Minecraft has now sold over 7 million copies, developer Mojang announced today over Twitter.

"Minecraft on Xbox has now sold 7 million copies!!! CRAZY! =D," business developer Daniel Kaplan said.

It is unclear if this figure is referencing the Xbox Live Arcade version, the disc-based retail version, or combined sales of both. Mojang was not immediately available to comment.

The XBLA version of Minecraft crossed 6 million units sold at the end of March, while the disc-based iteration released this month and broke retail records in the United States.

Meanwhile, the PC/Mac/Linux version of Minecraft recently crossed 11 million copies sold.

Xbox 360 sales will shortly overtake Wii in the UK

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 27 Juni 2013 | 21.50

Microsoft's Xbox 360 is poised to overtake Nintendo's Wii as the best-selling console of this generation in the UK, games industry number-cruncher GfK Chart-Track has told MCV.

The latest figures show that the Xbox 360, which launched in December 2005, has shifted over 8.4 million units.

Microsoft has closed the sales gap between Nintendo's Wii, which once dominated the hardware charts. The Xbox 360 will overtake the Wii's hardware sales in a matter of days, says Chart-Track.

1.5 million sales now separate the Xbox 360 from the PlayStation 2, the UK's best-selling console of all time. Sony's legendary machine, which launched in 2000, has shifted 10 million units.

Microsoft is still supporting the Xbox 360, and announced a redesigned version of the console at E3 2013. Many high-profile titles, including Grand Theft Auto V, will also grace the platform before Christmas.

"This is an historic milestone and our sincere thanks goes to each and every person that has bought and enjoyed Xbox 360 over the past eight years," said UK Xbox executive Harvey Eagle to MCV.

"As you saw at E3 earlier this month, we announced a new Xbox 360 form factor and we are committed to ensuring Xbox 360 remains the best place to play games, connect with friends and enjoy your entertainment."

"You'll see great exclusive content coming not only to Xbox 360, but also to Xbox One later this year."

The Xbox One will launch in November.

Consoles becoming more like PCs, says Alienware

Game consoles and PCs are more alike than ever before, according to Alienware general manager Frank Azor. Speaking with PCGamesN, Azor said the distinctions between Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC architecture are slipping away.

"A lot of the innovations and things that are proven on the PC are making their ways onto consoles," Azor said. "The consoles are looking more and more like PCs every day."

The Xbox One and PS4 are both built on a PC-focused x86 architecture. And from a service standpoint, Azor pointed out, the platforms are also adopting features PC gamers have had for years.

"You're installing games now instead of running them off the disc, because that's the right thing to do; you're downloading games digitally, which we've been doing on PC for years; they're integrating certain TV aspects and stuff, well, ten years ago we started experimenting with media center," Azor said.

The Xbox One ($500) and PS4 ($400) launch later this year.

Sony explains why PS Plus is required for PS4 online play

Sony has explained why a PlayStation Plus subscription will be required PlayStation 4 titles online. In the latest issue of Famitsu (translated by Kotaku), Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida said that it would have been "absurd" to keep the service free, considering the "large investment of resources" Sony has made for online infrastructure.

"The main pillar for the PS4 will be online play. We're developing many new ways to play and connect which requires a large investment of resources," Yoshida said.

"Considering the cost, to try to keep such a service free and consequently lower the quality would be absurd. We decided that if that's the case, then it would be better to receive proper payment and continue to offer a good service."

Currently, Sony does not charge a penny for online play for the PlayStation 3. PlayStation Plus subscriptions are offered for $50 per year and current memberships will carry over to the PS4.

The move puts Sony in line with Microsoft, which currently mandates Xbox 360 users have an Xbox Live Gold membership ($60/year) to play games online and access features like Netflix.

Elsewhere in the Famitsu issue, Sony Japan president Hiroshi Kawano said just because the PS4 is the main show moving forward, support for the PS3 is not ending anytime soon.

"It's been seven years since the release of the PS3 and the console continues to sell at a constant pace, plus we have many upcoming titles," Kawano said. "We have no intention of immediately shifting from the PS3 to the PS4."

"With the 2014 launch of our cloud service in the US allowing users to play PS3 games on the PS4, some people may switch consoles from the PS3 to the PS4," he added. "But that'll be a gradual process, and to say 'we're releasing a new console, so trade in your old ones for it' would be a maker's ego talking, plain and simple."

The PS4 launches this holiday for $399/€399/£349.

Hotline Miami Review

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 26 Juni 2013 | 21.51

Hotline Miami is a top-down shooter where you murder everybody you see. You require nothing more than an answering machine message and an address to butcher each and every soul within the game's pixelated, 2D walls. But you're never given a reason for your psychotic actions--the focus is on the joy of murder. Although the PlayStation 3 version doesn't control as well as the PC or Vita version, Hotline Miami's frantic gameplay and slick presentation still deliver pulse-pounding thrills.

The game opens with the nameless protagonist standing in a room. And, mysteriously, there are three men wearing animal masks making cryptic comments about your identity and actions. Is this real, or some drug-induced fever dream? You're not given much time to contemplate it. The screen fades to black, and you awake in a filthy apartment in April 1989. A bloodstained shirt lies in the hall as an answering machine light blinks on and off. This is the setup for most of the 19 chapters that make up Hotline Miami. A short message asks you to "clean up" or "visit" a certain address, which is followed by a trip to a building full of supposed criminals that you must slaughter floor by floor.

You move around and aim using the analogue sticks in the vein of a dual joystick shooter. You can expand your viewing radius to spy further into the levels--an important factor, given that even a single distant gunshot can kill you. If you're trying to be stealthy, you can opt to throw your weapon, allowing you to knock over and disarm an enemy. You can then stand over your downed foe and finish them off with punches to brutal and nauseating effect.

Sadly, the transition to the PlayStation 3 controller hasn't been without issue. Accurately aiming at enemies is much harder than the mouse-supported PC version, because the aiming reticule floats at a fixed distance. This means you have to be much more accurate with your aiming. A lock-on feature that allows you to auto-aim at selected enemies has been included, but in frantic engagements, using this is often more hassle than it's worth. The awkward button combinations required can cause you to fire or throw your weapon without intention, which--considering how easily you can be killed--is less than ideal. It's not enough to entirely ruin the experience, but when you're on a high score streak, the last thing you want is for the the controls to get in the way.

Before the start of each level, you choose from a selection of animal masks, most of which have useful perks. For instance, if you wear the Tony the Tiger mask, you have faster executions, while George the Giraffe allows you to see farther. They're a neat companion to the combat system, which initially sees you taking down enemies with your fists and with a selection of melee weapons that you pick up, such as baseball bats, iron bars, knives, and swords.

Enemies die with a single blow, as do you, so not being overrun by a group of bloodthirsty malcontents is key to making it through a level alive. Mixing up the weapons you use and the order in which you move through the rooms is just as important, as is getting into a close position for a brutal takedown. The environment plays its part too. Doors can be used to knock over enemies, while certain walls can be shot through. This variety ensures the action is consistently engaging over the course of the game.

If you choose to go in with guns blazing, there are lots of shotguns, automatic rifles, machine guns, and silenced pistols on offer. Gunshots attract the attention of nearby enemies, who quickly come to investigate the disturbance. And while you often find yourself shooting wide of targets, your enemies have fast trigger fingers and always hit their mark. Despite that, enemy actions are largely dumb and predictable, but this works in the game's favour. With death always a second away, manipulating and herding baddies into your gunfire is very enjoyable. It may also seem odd that dead bodies often go unnoticed, but the action is so frenetic and entertaining that you barely have time to notice.

Saints Row IV banned in Australia

Saints Row IV has become the first game to be refused classification in Australia since the introduction of the R18+ adult rating on January 1 this year.

According to a statement issued today by the Australian Classification Board's acting director, Donald McDonald, the game was refused the maximum R18+ rating for games due to its implied sexual violence and drug use related to player incentive.

"In the Board's opinion, Saints Row IV, includes interactive, visual depictions of implied sexual violence which are not justified by context," the statement said. "In addition, the game includes elements of illicit or proscribed drug use related to incentives or rewards. Such depictions are prohibited by the computer games guidelines."

To date, 17 games have successfully been granted the R18+ rating, including Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge, Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition and Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel. The refused classification status of Saints Row IV now effectively bans it from sale nationally.

GameSpot contacted the game's Australian distributor, but a spokesperson was unable to comment on the announcement, or whether the company plans to appeal the decision.

Saints Row IV was slated for release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on August 22 this year.

E3 Highlights: Best Controllers - PS4 vs. Xbox One

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 24 Juni 2013 | 22.07

@Syphen_bast

personally, the best feature is the position of the left thumb.  it allows the thumbs and entire hand to start from a relaxed position.

it's almost impossible for that to be the case with the ps3.  your thumbs will always be in a flexed starting position.  and, for those who don't flex their thumbs with the ps3, unless, your fingers are a lot longer than my long fingers, you're going to have trouble reaching other buttons.

however, i agree, i'd like to give em both a test run, since, it looks like the ps4 might have fixed that problem by increasing the distance of the thumbs.

Xbox One pricing "too high" says business author

The Art of Pricing author Rafi Mohammed believes Microsoft fumbled an "simple issue" and has priced the Xbox One "too high."

In a new Bloomberg TV segment, Mohammed--who has spent 21 years working on pricing issues--praised Microsoft for reversing its controversial policies, but ultimately said he believes the Xbox One's premium price could "derail" the system this holiday.

"You want to get that console in consumers' hands, and then where you really make the money is off of the games," Mohammed said. "So it was really surprising that they charged such a premium, especially when they had a lot of negatives…like the very restrictive DRM, which they did retract from."

"One of the key things is that they really listened to their consumers and they did backtrack and they reduced the price, but I still think the price is too high," he added. "So it's still a $100 premium."

The PlayStation 4 launches this holiday at $400.

Mohammed said every Xbox One coming bundled with a Kinect 2.0 sensor is a benefit over the PS4, where users must pay $60 for the peripheral. Still, he said he believes Microsoft can decrease the Xbox One's price by making Kinect an accessory, similar to the scenario for Xbox 360 users.

This is unlikely to happen, according to past comments from Microsoft designers, who have positioned the device as an integral component of the Xbox One. Microsoft has also said that it has no plans to revisit Xbox One pricing.

Xbox boss Don Mattrick defended the Xbox One pricing point during E3 this month, saying Microsoft is "over-delivering value" and that $500 is not "ridiculous" based on other technology options consumers have today.

Mohammed is an economics graduate of Boston University, the London School of Economics & Political Science, and Cornell University (Ph. D.) He is the founder of Culture of Profit LLC in Cambridge, Mass.

Suda 51 says sexuality in games a touchy subject

Grasshopper Manufacture designer Suda 51 has spoken out in response to criticisms regarding how some of his games portray female characters.

Speaking with GamesIndustry International during E3 this month, Suda said anything a person creates has the potential to be criticized, including games like Lollipop Chainsaw and No More Heroes.

"I think in a way when you get criticism, that means people are paying attention to your work. Any kind of artistic value, anything you create, there's always some kind of criticism behind it," Suda said. "Which means we're making an impression and an impact."

"So I think we'll stay with what we're thinking and just keep going with that way of thinking…And when I say that, sexuality is a touchy subject," he added. "We don't want to make people offended, but we're trying to create something that makes people laugh a bit because we're [dealing with] that topic."

In Lollipop Chainsaw, 18-year-old protagonist Juliet lays waste to zombies with a chainsaw while wearing a cheerleading outfit. And in No More Heroes, Sylvia motivates the player by offering sex as a reward for in-game accomplishments.

Suda 51 and Grasshopper Manufacture are currently working on Killer Is Dead, due for release later this summer on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

E3 Highlights: Best Next-Gen Graphics - Forza 5, The Division, Battlefield 4

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Minggu, 23 Juni 2013 | 21.50

I thought MGSV looked stunning in many ways, it's probably the reason I actually was kind of excited during Microsoft's E3 press conference. The thing is, they actually said the game will be looking even better!

I definitely think The Devision looked great and like many others for some reason I really enjoyed that cardoor being closed, which seemed really stupid afterwards, but even though this might sound weird, the only thing I kind of didn't like about what we saw of the game was the UI or HUD. I mean I really liked that virtual map on the ground, but I didn't like how it looked when the guy brought up his arm-menu thingy and perhaps it would have looked even better if there wasn't constantly that UI, which I know was already pretty minimal, next to the character.
And there were just some other things that kind of put me off on the game and tbh. I'm not too excited about it anymore.

Killzone looked graphically amazing, although I'm not sure if I'd rather have those graphics than 30FPS, especially as a now mainly PC gamer. I played the other Killzone games and they were definitely playable, but I hope I don't notice it too much were I to pick this game up. I know they have to make compromises, obviously and it might be for the better, but we'll see.

I could go on for hours about all the other games, but lastly about BF4. I'm not really sure when it comes to graphics, sure my eyes enjoy all the colours and effects at the beginning of that trailer, but it feels like that might just have been a little too much. I know that's just a small portion of the single player and the game does look great in many ways, I definitely like their art style, but I hope they don't go too overboard with the Michael Bay-ness and lense flares.

Assassin's Creed IV DLC features a new assassin

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 21 Juni 2013 | 21.50

Single-player DLC for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag will revolve around Adewale, who serves as Captain Edward Kenway's first mate.

A Best Buy listing (spotted on AllGamesBeta) has unveiled the season pass DLC for the upcoming Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. The content will revolve around a new assassin, Adewale, who serves as Captain Edward Kenway's first mate.

The main campaign for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag focuses on Edward Kenway, grandfather of Assassin's Creed III protagonist Connor.

Best Buy has priced the AC4 season pass at $19.99, claiming a saving of $20 on buying all the Assassin's Creed IV content separately. The DLC will reportedly contain new single-player and multiplayer missions, alongside new customisation options.

Assassin's Creed III's single-player DLC took place over three chapters, focusing on a alternate reality storyline where George Washington declared himself King, and protagonist Connor inherited a set of super powers.

This year's Assassin's Creed will also be a launch title for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Bethesda didn't want to "force" multiplayer into new Wolfenstein

Some fans may have been miffed to learn the upcoming first-person shooter Wolfenstein: The New Order would not include a multiplayer component, but according to Bethesda, such a mode didn't fit in with Machine Games' creative vision for the game.

"We talked to Machine Games about the game they wanted to make and multiplayer wasn't in their thought process," Bethesda marketing VP Pete Hines told Eurogamer.

He explained that just because past games in the Wolfenstein series did include multiplayer, that doesn't mean all entries must.

"We're not going to force it down their throats and say, 'Well, the last games did, so you have to do it.' These guys do cool stuff," Hines said. "If you look at The Chronicles of Riddick or you look at The Darkness, those games have a creative element to them that is similar to the things they're doing in Wolfenstein and that's what attracted us to them, and that's what attracted us to their vision of Wolfenstein."

"And we said 'Okay, run with that.' We're not going to say, 'Oh, we'll find somebody else to do the multiplayer.'"

Bethesda is no stranger to publishing high-profile single-player-only games. The studio is also behind franchises like The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Dishonored.

Wolfenstein: The New Order launches for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC later this year.

Xbox One policy changes will not affect 2014 release date for Asia

Microsoft has no official comment on whether original policy has anything to do with late release window in region; or whether new policy changes will bump up release window.

Microsoft has confirmed to GameSpot that the Asia launch window for the Xbox One will still remain at "late 2014", despite the recent DRM policy change for the device.

The company has no new comments on the Asia launch date at this point in time, which includes countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. Last week, Microsoft said the Xbox One would launch in the region in late 2014, but it is unknown whether the previous online policy set by the company had was a factor in the delayed roll out for Asia. 21 countries will be selling the device in November this year, including the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, and more.

Microsoft recently revised its online policy for the Xbox One console, stating that it will remove used game restrictions, 24-hour online check-ins, and region-locks. The console will be available for $500.

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition taken down from online stores

Remake of classic RPG series removed from Apple app store and Beamdog site due to unresolved legal issues.

Beamdog and Overhaul Games have taken down their Baldur's Gate remake--Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition--from online stores.

The PC, Mac, and iOS RPG remake is no longer available on Beamdog's site or the Apple app store. Beamdog and Overhaul Games president Trent Oster said that this was due to the company attempting to "resolve a number of contractual issues." This also means that the company cannot release the latest patch and an Android version of the remake.

Oster also added that the same issues will also prevent the launch of Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition. For more information, check out the post on the official site.

Square Enix: PC version of Final Fantasy XV "undecided"

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 19 Juni 2013 | 21.51

Chief technology officer Yoshihisa Hashimoto says that FFXV will need a high-powered PC to run; PS Vita cross-play options and smartphone/tablet apps up for consideration.

The latest issue of Famitsu (via Final Fantasy Network) says that publisher Square Enix is still undecided on whether to release a PC version of Final Fantasy XV.

According to Square Enix's chief technology officer Yoshihisa Hashimoto, if a PC version were to be released, it would require an expensive machine to run. Hashimoto said that the company was waiting to gauge audience demand before making a decision on a PC version.

Hashimoto added that FFXV is being developed in a PC environment and that platforms that support DirectX 11 will be likely candidates for the game, hence the next-generation leap to the PS4 and Xbox One.

Square Enix is also considering using the PlayStation Vita for cross-platform functions for FFXV. Smartphones and tablets are also on the table for various FFXV-related features and apps.

Final Fantasy XV was announced at Sony's E3 press conference last week. The game was originally called Final Fantasy Versus XIII. For more information, check out GameSpot's coverage on the title.

Steam may allow game sharing - Report

Recent client beta suggests update that will allow users to lend titles to other people on their friend list.

A few lines of code in the latest Steam client beta suggests that Steam users may be able to share their games with other users on their friends list.

According to a post from Neogaf by user "Grief.exe", the discovered lines of code suggest that users may eventually be able to loan out games in their library and take them back at any time. The relevant code of text from the client are as follows:

"SteamUI_JoinDialog_SharedLicense_Title" "Shared game library"
"SteamUI_JoinDialog_SharedLicenseLocked_OwnerText" "Just so you know, your games are currently in use by %borrower%. Playing now will send %borrower% a notice that it's time to quit."
"SteamUI_JoinDialog_SharedLicenseLocked_BorrowerText" "This shared game is currently unavailable. Please try again later or buy this game for your own library."

There is currently no word on how Valve will handle this among third-party publishers. For more news on Steam, check out GameSpot's recent coverage.

PS4 demand may exceed supply - Jack Tretton

GameStop executives to buy "every single unit" of the PS4 that Sony can manufacture, according to SCEA CEO.

Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton has said during a Forbes interview that demand for the PS4 may exceed its supply.

Tretton said that "given the technology that [SCE is] offering, given the software lineup, given the price point we have, that [it will] have consumers interested in excess of what [the company is] able to manufacture." He was also told by GameStop executives last week that GameStop would buy "every single unit" Sony could manufacture. Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House said a week before that the demand for the PS4 "may well outstrip supply".

Tretton said during Sony's E3 2013 press conference last week that PS4 games would not need regular online check-ins and disc-based PS4 games could be traded. For more information, check out GameSpot's coverage on Sony and its new console.
