Video Review - Aliens: Colonial Marines

Knew it. I could tell this was going to be mediocre-ville when I saw the gameplay demos. No suspense in an Aliens game? really?

This may sound weird, but when it starts up and you exit the cryo pod in Halo 4, walking through the ship briefly I thought "These are the guys that should make an Aliens game". Of course Halo took some influence from Aliens, the future marine culture and chatter, motion tracker.. Anyway, I would still buy this further on in the cheap. I do like Aliens, I might be able to use my imagination!

Gaming Meme History: Leeroy Jenkins

I was hoping that this was a video about all the gaming memes that have sprung up over the years but it was a good video, I guess ;)

And yes, Leroy Jenkins is classic and forever will be - whether you like/liked WoW or not, that raid video was so funny and epitomized the pain-in-the-ass of grinding that could still be fun, even when you got wiped out. I'm pretty sure this meme's going to be the one that will be commonly referred to in the future when people look back at this time period that we live in.

Wii U owners promised an exclusive Rayman Legends demo

Last week Ubisoft simultaneously announced that its twice-delayed Wii U-exclusive Rayman Legends was being bumped from February to September and was also going multiplatform. Ubisoft has now said it will be offering an exclusive Rayman Legends demo for Wii U owners, and admits it understands why people might be frustrated by the delay.

"Thanks for all your feedback regarding Rayman Legends in all of its forms. We have heard you and we will continue to listen. We understand your frustration and that you want to get your hands on the game," said Ubisoft's Facebook page. Last week the publisher confirmed that the Wii U version of the game was ready, and the only reason behind the delay was to launch simultaneously across Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U.

No date was given on when Wii U owners might be able to access the new demo. "We are working with the development team to provide you with a new, exclusive demo for the Wii U soon. Stay tuned for more."

There's already a Rayman Legends demo up on Wii U, which has been available since December 2012.

An anonymous Ubisoft developer has expressed their frustration with the delay, saying "for practical matters, you'll have to wait for some months for the game to be released and will most likely serve for more content to be added and do it better. For us, this means we've spent 6 months barely seeing our wives, kids, and friends for nothing because, after all, such a haste wasn't needed. Believe it, it was a hell to swallow these news."

Rayman Legends will be released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U in September 2013. For more information on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

UK Chart: Dead Space 3 is first, but sells 26 per cent less than Dead Space 2

EA's micro-transaction tinged horror shooter Dead Space 3 has blasted its way to the top of the UK charts, though sales were down 26 per cent compared to its predecessor.

Dead Space 2 launched at a similar period in 2011, though the third game has garnered its fair share of criticism thanks to its choice to include an action-heavy co-op campaign and generous portions of microtransactions.

Chart positions 2 to 5 remained the same, with 2013's usual suspects filling out the list: FIFA 13, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Far Cry 3 and Hitman: HD Trilogy.

Last week's chart winner, Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, saw a 63% drop in sales and landed in sixth place.

The rest of the top 10 is also familiar. Need for Speed: Most Wanted is in seventh, Just Dance 4 eighth, Hitman: Absolution ninth and, thanks to the 3DS release of the game, Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing Transformed finishes tenth.

Elsewhere in the chart, and perhaps buoyed by Super Bowl XLVII, was Madden 13 in 19th place. DmC: Devil May Cry, which sat atop the chart but three weeks ago, slipped to 25th.

This week sees the release of Gearbox's Aliens: Colonial Marines on Tuesday February 12 - will it be able to knock Dead Space 3 off the top next week?

With Connor Gone, Where Could Assassin's Creed Go Next?

Martin picks out the places he wants to travel to in the next Assassin's Creed.

As Assassin's Creed III ended, Connor's storyline felt like it had come to a fairly natural close. But Ratonhnhaké:ton's time as the series' main protagonist seems to have passed: Ubisoft confirmed yesterday that the next Assassin's Creed would feature a new hero and a new setting.

This is an important announcement on Ubisoft's part. The next Assassin's Creed marks a rare opportunity, and with both Connor and present-day conduit Desmond presumably taking a rest for while, the series now has the biggest opportunity for a blank slate and a fresh start since the first game launched in 2007. And with a new batch of consoles on the horizon, it seems particularly fitting for Ubisoft to transition into the next generation (perhaps literally, considering the series' genealogy-obsessed narrative) of Assassin's Creed.

A new beginning would also give the series a chance to refocus its core mechanics. Assassin's Creed III was a complicated, conflicted game--its final chase sequence was honestly one of the worst things I played in the whole of 2012, but I still ended up quite admiring much of the ambition in the overall game. There's clearly a lot of potential across the multiple studios developing the game, and a fresh take could allow that talent to be laser-focused.

But while Ubisoft's "new setting" doesn't exactly help narrow down the entirety of history--and I'd also say it's unlikely Ubisoft would want to abandon all the time and money it poured into making 18th century America--there's a few places I'd really like to see the series head.

Victorian London

You can't write anything about a new Assassin's Creed setting without mentioning London. It's the law. Though in the interests of full disclosure, I am English, and over here we like to think we're still living in the nineteenth century anyway. ACIII briefly dipped its toes into London in its opening, but imagine the possibilities of an Assassin's Creed set in the dark, smog-laden city in the full throes of the Industrial Revolution. It would be like Dickens, but with more even pocket watches, big hats, crossbows, and Templars.

Paris in World War I

Taking Assassin's Creed to Paris could mark as a homecoming of sorts for French publisher Ubisoft. France was a key location in World War I, with the Battle of the Marne in 1914 establishing the Western Front across Belgium and north-eastern France. This would allow for Ubisoft to develop a few show-piece scenes of trench warfare, similar in sorts to the epic musket battles of ACII. The politics behind the war would likely allow Ubisoft to elegantly weave in the Templars and Assassins, and Paris' artistic spirit and gorgeous architecture would bring a vibrancy to the series.

India under the British Raj

The British Raj, which ruled over India from 1858 to 1947, was the engine of The British Empire and also a politically complex period in a geographical area of extreme beauty. Imagine an Assassin's Creed in Calcutta, or replacing Assassin's Creed III's Frontier with India's jungles and wildlife. Themes of capitalism, corporation, and oppression would work well with the Templars, and the game could even head back a little further and overlap with Assassin's Creed III, showing The East India Company appealing to British parliament to pass the Tea Act of 1773 as a way of offsetting the company's severe financial woes, an event which would serve as one of major moments leading up to the American Revolution.

Ocean piracy in South Carolina

With sailing the high seas one of the most celebrated (and enjoyable) new additions in Assassin's Creed III, there's a certain sense of logic for Ubisoft to continue down this path. And what better way than with the most famous pirate of them all, Blackbeard, in an adventure that features his famous blockading of Charleston in 1718? Or a game that spans multiple decades and could bring in Jean Lafitte and the War of 1812, which should at least let Ubisoft reuse those redcoat models. To make the piracy angle even more tempting, one Reddit poster claims to have spotted a marketing presentation for an Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flags.

Feudal Japan

Assassin's Creed: Embers, the disappointing short film made by Ubisoft to end Ezio's storyline, spoke of the Assassin order in China during the Ming Dynasty. Shrouding Assassin's Creed in the exoticism of a historical Eastern country would likely appeal to many, with Japan's Sengoku period of particular interest to me. This era of Japanese history was laced with political intrigue and constant conflict as the country attempted to remain separate from the rest of the world while establishing unification across Japan's various clans, all of which would serve Assassin's Creed well.

Any of those five settings would be absolutely fantastic, if you ask me. Elsewhere in the GameSpot office there's a suggestion from Cam for Ubisoft to tackle the War of Scottish Independence (think Braveheart) and Mark would like to see what happens when you set the Animus for 65 million years BC. Dreamfall Chapters: Keeping Faith in the Long Journey Ahead

Fans of The Longest Journey and Dreamfall will once again return to Arcadia, should Red Thread Games' Kickstarter campaign prove successful.

The Longest Journey fans are a patient bunch.

The classic adventure game was released in 2000; its sequel, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, followed six years later. Dreamfall left us hanging, deliberating the fates of its sharply-drawn, empathetic characters for another half-dozen years. Finally, a new chapter is in development: Dreamfall Chapters. Series creator Ragnar Tørnquist is again taking the helm, though with a new studio created specifically to bring heroines Zoë Castillo and April Ryan back to our monitors.

That new studio is Red Thread Games--and like many independent developers, it has no lack of great ideas and creative drive. What it doesn't have, however, is the funding for a full game. And where else but Kickstarter would such a studio turn for support? Today, Tørnquist and team have announced their crowdfunding program for Dreamfall Chapters, outlining an $850,000 goal, as well as their vision for the game, its characters, and its world.

I got in touch with Tørnquist to clarify that vision. Dreamfall Chapters has a storied legacy to live up to, and I asked him why he thinks The Longest Journey and Dreamfall have attracted such passionate fans.

"They're very personal games, almost intimately so," he responds. "And while they're not perfect by any means, I think they're broken in just the right ways. They don't feel mass produced. There are still sharp edges and rough surfaces, unpolished and handcrafted. They feel honest, alive and real. They both have, as I'm so fond of saying, a soul."

"Tooting our own horn a bit, I also think both games feature very strong characters that players feel something for and care about, and good stories that really engage. Everyone who plays TLJ and Dreamfall has a strong emotional reaction to the games--both positive and negative--and those feelings linger and are remembered years after playing. I don't think you can play our games and not feel anything."

The lovely worlds also have a lot to do with the series' success, and Tørnquist admits that Dreamfall stumbled a bit in that regard, at least in comparison with its richly conceived predecessor. Expect to see that richness return in Dreamfall Chapters. "There will be more interactivity, more spaces to explore, more things to look at and to dig into. Scenery, characters, books, documents, strange creatures, sights and sounds… We want to bring back the magic from TLJ, that unique and special feeling of being in a place rich with history and lore. A place that's lived in, with living characters who live real lives, with families and friends, ups and downs. Worlds that exist beyond the confines of the screen."

One of the strengths of the series is how its people, places, and story beats live on in the minds of its players. It's hard to forget April Ryan's avian sidekick Crow, who delights in his womanizing ways. Or Burns Flipper, foul-mouthed hacker extraordinaire. Or indeed the worlds of both Stark and Arcadia, the former acting as the technology-focused yin to the other's magical yang. Dreamfall and The Longest Journey can wriggle into your psyche and remain there for good. The games didn't just make a mark on their players, however: they made a mark on Tørnquist, too.

"There's so much of myself in April Ryan, Zoë, Kian--Crow, definitely--and TLJ was the most personal and intimate story I have ever told," he says. "It's so close to my heart, such a big part of what I was back then, and even now. It's almost uncomfortably revealing, and it's a bit hard for me to sit down and play that game without feeling exposed."

"So yeah, I don't think I could go on making games without first making Dreamfall Chapters, and being able to conclude Zoë's story and the Dreamer Cycle. It's really, really important to me, and to all of us on the team."

The memories are fondly recalled, but that was the past. What, pray tell, does the future bring for Zoë, April, Brian Westhouse, and their contemporaries? (Caution: Spoilers ahead!) Dreamfall ended with one of its main characters presumed dead, and the other in a coma. It's hard to imagine a newcomer jumping head first into the continuing story and making much sense of it, and Tørnquist admits that if you haven't played Dreamfall, you might be a little lost. However, the team is aiming to shepherd new players into the universe without boring returning fans. But what about returning fans? What events will usher us back into the ongoing drama? (Caution, once more: spoilers for Dreamfall ahead!)

Says Tørnquist: "So Zoë is lost in this place called the Storytime. She's still in a coma, it's a year later, and the doctors are losing hope that she'll ever wake up. But Gabriel, her dad, still has faith. After all, that's what Dreamfall was all about--faith--and that's not lost on any of us. Players will have to help Zoë escape Storytime, wake up, be reborn, and confront who she was and who she's turning into. It's about growing up, growing into yourself, becoming who you're meant to me, or who other people need you to be--and to be okay with that, to be comfortable with your role in this world."

"And the worlds have changed quite a bit, too. With WatiCorp's Dreamer released--think game console that allows you to dream lucid, realistic dreams, where you are in control of what you see and feel and experience--the world has become completely addicted, and society is crumbling. People are hooked up at home or in opium den-like Dream Factories that have popped up everywhere, and they're not going to work or taking care of their loved ones or doing anything at all. So the world is just falling apart."

You'll experience the story from three different perspectives--no surprise, given that Dreamfall took on the same structure. But Zoë is still the main character, and Dreamfall Chapters will bring her story to a conclusion. Adds Tørnquist, "Dreamfall Chapters is a game about changes. About life. About the chapters of existence--growing, learning, adapting. And time will pass in the game, from early spring through to winter, as our characters continue their journeys."

‪Big In Asia Livestream Replay: Tales of Xillia 2‬

It's funny that the guy clearly has absolutely no idea what he's doing even though he's trying to explain it. He's wailing on an enemy resistant to physical weaponry, all the while doing 0 damage. Very rarely he exposes its weakness using a wind attack and begins to do damage, but at no point does he question why he's doing 0 damage. If he had an elemental weapon (he should at this point) or at least used an elemental arte before every attack he made, he would be doing more than 0. The resistances and weaknesses are clearly shown at the top right when he is targeting which enemy to attack, not even in Japanese, so you really would have to have no idea what you're doing to miss it.

In addition, I'm pretty sure the adds in that fight never stop respawning, so there's no reason to kill them. This is all along with completely wasting overlimit mode, etc, etc. I've played through the game (I own it) and enjoyed it, and at this point in the game, this is all common sense, explained to you in Japanese AND you really should've figured it out by now, ESPECIALLY if you supposedly played the first Xillia (hint: it's mostly the same).

Also, for all the people saying we didn't get the first Xillia: we ARE getting it this year.

Guild Wars 2 Flame & Frost content out end of February

Next content update to feature new PvP map and guild missions.

Gamers looking to expand their time with GameSpot's PC and RPG game of 2012 can look forward to more content soon.

According to NCSoft's official page for the game, developer ArenaNet will be releasing the second wave of downloadable content titled Flame & Frost: The Gathering Storm. The update features a new PvP map called the Spirit Watch, new guild missions, a new selectable achievement system, and a new PvP mode where two teams of equal average rating pit against each other in a quick match.

Players can expect to check it out on February 26. For more information on Guild Wars 2, check out the recent video below.
