It was yet again the top-selling console in the United States, outperforming the Xbox One, which shifted 311,000 units during the period.

This news was surprising to some, myself included, because Microsoft made aggressive moves during the month to sell more consoles. The company launched a system-seller game, Titanfall on March 11, and even released a special Titanfall Xbox One bundle that was almost immediately marked down to $450 by many retailers, Microsoft included.

At that lower price point and with a bundled game, shoppers still sided with the PS4, which begs the question: How can Microsoft turn things around? Or do the results of one month--very early on in the platform's lifecycle--not really mean much in the wider picture? To help us get a better understanding of the state of the Xbox One, we spoke with a handful of industry analysts. Below you'll find their thoughts, as well as commentary from GameSpot news editors.

Of note: We approached Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities, but he declined to participate. In addition, the comments you see below were made before Microsoft announced Tuesday that it would launch the Xbox One in China this September. China is a potentially lucrative market, and Microsoft will be the first of the major three platform holders (Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo) to release a console there. However, it remains to be seen what kind of impact China's various manufacturing and content restrictions will have on the local game industry.

Colin Sebastian - Robert W. Baird

"I think if we didn't have the PS4 to benchmark Xbox One against, the perspective would be a little more positive. For example, unit sales of Xbox One are tracking 60 percent above Xbox 360 sales at a similar point post launch. But in an age where competition matters, Microsoft doesn't want to fall too far behind Sony. In terms of the March data, not a bad month for Xbox One, but the PS4 still has stronger momentum, which we attribute to the price difference, lack of consumer enthusiasm for Kinect, and otherwise similar features."

"Looking ahead, it is difficult to foresee any tipping point that would push Xbox One ahead of PS4. Both platforms have strong software pipelines in the months ahead, and both are adding incrementally to multi-media functionality as the battle for the living room unfolds. If market share matters more than anything else to Microsoft, they will slash the price of Xbox One, or even strip out Kinect; but those are very unlikely scenarios unless the PS4 market share advantage expands meaningfully from here."

Doug Creutz - Cowen & Company

"Titanfall did quite well, but...the PS4 still outsold the Xbox One in March in the US. I would make the following comments:

Sony is still catching up supply to demand, whereas Microsoft is not. I think we will probably begin to see 'normal' numbers (i.e. no backlog for Sony in monthly numbers) by the end of Q2.

While there was some effective price cutting going on, there was no major price cut announcement.

While Xbox One is trending behind PS4, it is also trending ahead of where 360 was at similar point.

We are still very early in the cycle. The PS4 lead over Xbox One in the US is still relatively narrow.

However, I do think Microsoft is clearly not in the position they hoped they would be in (i.e. slightly behind Sony in US and well behind on a worldwide basis). I think a sharper price cut before holiday 2014 is probably necessary if they want to catch up."

Arvind Bhatia - Sterne Agee

"I think Xbox One still has plenty of opportunity to improve sales. We are just in the first innings of the new cycle, as you know. Technically, both PS4 and Xbox One are not that different so it really boils down to its higher price compared to PS4. I think Microsoft should consider un-bundling Kinect and lower the standard price of Xbox One as soon as possible."

Justin Haywald - Senior GameSpot News Editor

We're early in the life cycle for both consoles, and Microsoft isn't doing poorly by any stretch of the imagination, but in the long term a gap in sales will only continue to hurt consumers' perception of the brand. A significant price cut is probably the most important thing that Microsoft can do to narrow the widening gap between them and the PlayStation 4.

I don't think Microsoft needs to necessarily get rid of the Kinect, but they've failed to make the case that it's an essential piece of additional hardware. And while a strong slate of Xbox One exclusives from third parties would be helpful, publishers have fewer and fewer reasons to develop exclusively for one platform anymore. Timed exclusives aren't enough anymore to really accelerate console sales--as we saw last month with Titanfall.

Adding entertainment options, as strange as it may seem, is actually closer to the right track: Microsoft needs to make the Xbox and its subscription feel like a worthwhile investment. They're already behind in offering the same kind of free games content that Sony gives to PlayStation 4 owners. But imagine if they pre-empted Sony with access to a streaming version of part of the Xbox 360 library (or at least part of the XBLA library) free to Live subscribers. On it's own, that wouldn't be enough, but that's the kind of direction that would make important inroads.

Eddie Makuch - GameSpot News Editor

"I was surprised that the PS4 outsold the Xbox One in March, a month where Titanfall led overall software sales. I thought such a strong and highly marketed game, coupled with price cuts on the Titanfall Xbox One bundle from many retailers to $450, would net Microsoft a victory. But that didn't happen. Still, it is far too early to say Microsoft is in trouble. The PS4 may be off to a red-hot start, but we are only six months into a console cycle that will probably last for the next decade. The Xbox One itself is showing positive signs (sales are up 60 percent over the Xbox 360 at the same point in its lifecycle), so the platform is clearly not hurting. Plus, we're heading into E3 where Microsoft likely has some major announcements in store for the future of the platform. Bet against Microsoft at your peril."

Do you think the Xbox One is in trouble? He said customer support representatives are actively banning bots in dungeons to help clear up the issue, and that Bethesda is "doing a lot of work" behind the scenes to "keep the game honest." You can help Bethesda by reporting botting and spamming activity, Firor said.

"In a world as large as ESO's, with endless variations of gameplay by players, it is impossible for QA to identify all bugs before launch" -- Firor

He also said that bug-fixing remains a constant task for Bethesda. Because The Elder Scrolls Online is so large and there are so many variables to consider, it was impossible to launch a bug-free product, he said.

"In a world as large as ESO's, with endless variations of gameplay by players, it is impossible for QA to identify all bugs before launch, but we're working hard to find and close them quickly," Firor said. "We've fixed many quest blockers, especially in zone, NPC guild, and main story quests, but we know there are still others."

Because the game's launch issues were so widespread, Firor said players who create an active account prior to 8 p.m. tonight and who are currently using their 30 days of included game time will be given five additional days of play time. If you're eligible for the extra game time, you'll be notified through email.

"This is a small gesture to show our thanks for being part of the ESO community while we work to make this extraordinary game and service even better," Firor said.

Firor went on to say that The Elder Scrolls Online's "Update 1" will not only introduce Craglorn, the game's first adventure zone, but it will also contain many tweaks and bug fixes. This update is currently in testing and you can see a full list of patch notes at the game's website.

Also in the blog post, Firor addressed The Elder Scrolls Online's review scores. He said he reads everything--positive and otherwise--and uses this feedback to inform how the game will shape and evolve over time.

"ESO generates strong emotions in gamers--both positive and negative. While I obviously don't agree with the more negative articles, the reviews are out there, and we read them to determine if there are legitimate complaints that we should address," Firor said. "Some of the negativity in reviews comes from bugs. As you can see, we're hard at work addressing them and will keep rolling out fixes. This game will get better and better every week."

Finally, Firor provided a long list of features and updates that Bethesda hopes to add to The Elder Scrolls Online throughout 2014 and beyond. All of the features you see below are in active development, Firor says, but there's no word yet on when they'll be delivered.

A system that allows grouped players to see each other even when they're in different phases.

A justice system—steal from and kill NPCs and deal with the consequences if you are caught.

Migration of European Megaserver to our European datacenter.

Field of View (FOV) adjustment.

Armor dyeing and tinting.

Two new Veteran Dungeons: Crypt of Hearts and City of Ash.

New region of Craglorn with a new Trial (the Serpent).

Increased ability to pick up items in the world.

Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood storyline and quests.

Spellcrafting.

Horse Racing.

Dragonstar Arena--similar to Trials, but built for a group of four.

Improvements to fishing.

Crafting system improvements.

Improved Looking for Group system.

Better NPC facial animations.

Guild functionality updates: guild store interface updates, customizable guild insignias, tabards, and guild ranks, and Guild Kiosks--guild stores open to everyone that are available to the highest-bidding guild.

Auto-leveling dungeons that level to your group leader.

Awards when you repeat dungeons.

Imperial City PvP dungeon.

The Elder Scrolls Online launched April 4 for PC. You run and jump, climb some walls, and maybe even laugh at how easy it all is. Just enter the door, right? No big deal. Well, N++ doesn't look kindly on brash punks. Make just one mistake and its the end of the road for your fleet-footed ninja. This is a platformer in which everything looks so doable at first--you see the missile launchers overhead, the alien blobs patrolling the ground--and so you plan the path through the chaos in advance. And then reality sets in. That missile? It hounds you, humming behind you like a death whistle as you race across the potholed ground. Distracted by imminent death, you lose sight of the alien bugger as it speeds toward you. In a blink, you're dead, your legacy splattered on the ground.

Alone, you grit your teeth and utter curses the likes of which have never been conceived. With friends, you sneer at their own failings. You see, cooperative in N++ doesn't just mean another ninja gets thrown into the party. The levels are constructed with tandems in mind, and one false step could derail the progress of the entire team. Just try squeezing through a narrow, bomb-lined path with three friends looking on, willing you to not mess up. But you do. Again. And you can't stop smiling. --Tom Mc Shea

Aztez

The Aztec-theme, monochromatic brawler Aztez may be friendly to button mashers, but in truth mobility is your greatest ally. I had the opportunity to try out the combat portion of this game, and was able to rack up some lengthy combos just by mashing out the light and heavy attacks. However, I also suffered several backstabs from the sidelines as my foes slowly surrounded me. After a quick death, a tried again only this time I made an effort to stay light on my toes. The game really opened for me after making this simple play style switch as I bounced off walls and sored over the heads of my foes, hopping from one target to the next while evenly spreading out the pain. And despite the game's 2D presentation and limited color pallet, the different enemy types were easy to discern--and prioritize--thanks to some creative character designs. Aztez also has an empire for you to manage when you're not spilling the blood of your enemies. However, I didn't get the chance to try it out. Team Colorblind, developers on Aztez, are hoping to have their game out towards the end of this year on Steam first, and then consoles second. --Maxwell McGee

Source

You float through an alien landscape, utterly alone, and yet completely serene. It's a land of wonder and beauty, where the odd geometric shapes that enclose you seem both understandable and outlandish, floating cubes and spheres that defy their geometric simplicity. Everything is strange, slightly unnerving yet mostly harmless, so as you glide through as a bio-luminescent firefly, you explore with eager curiosity. And it's a world that begs exploration. Those rocky outcrops overhead look so inviting, veiling who knows what kind of secret, and you want nothing more than to head toward them. What awaits you? Is it a glowing ball, a key to open the next part of the world? Or a diving bug whose infinite legs make your stomach turn?

Source is incredibly early, no more than a promise of what's to come, but there's a hint at something powerful even in its early stages. The puzzles intrigued me, as did the myriad crawlies you must contend with, but it's the unexplored oasis of possibilities that kindled my excitement. I could see myself spending hours within this foreign world if only to see what's hidden there. It's rare that a quick peak could spark such eagerness in me, but Source has certainly teased my imagination. --Tom Mc Shea

Velocity 2X

Velocity began its life as a humble PlayStation Mini on the PSP, where, as GameSpot's own Mark Walton noted in his review, the game was "a fun and inventive little shooter that offers lots of content for very little outlay." It was then upgraded to Velocity Ultra for the PlayStation 3, Vita, and PC, before finally settling on the recently announced Velocity 2X. Velocity 2X takes the series' top-down, sci-fi shooter action and layers on new platforming segments to help break up the space faring. In the section I played, the ship portions were much more focused on shooting, while the on-foot segments were more puzzle-oriented. Both had me teleporting around the map to either avoid, or navigate through, obstacles, but when on-foot I also had to find and activate a number of switches to open a gate and allow my ship to advance. It was a fun diversion and should bring a new challenge to Velocity fans from all the way back in the PlayStation Mini days. Velocity 2X is coming PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita sometime later this year. --Maxwell McGee

To Leave

Everyone must leave at some point. Maybe you're saying goodbye to childhood. Or waving one last wave to a loved one. We've all parted ways with what we once knew--the safe, the familiar--and awaited whatever came next with eager trepidation. To Leave explores that innate change in an abstract manner, asking the question of what's to come and letting you fill in the rest with your own answers. And though its core is so grounded, its realization of this theme is anything but. Doors in To Leave, like doors in real life, lead to a new beginning, and we can only imagine what lays beyond each locked passageway. But that's where To Leave stops dealing with reality, and instead takes a dreamlike bent.

As a young boy, your journey is one of danger. You grab on to a door--your one link between the past and future--and soar through the air while grasping firmly on to it. The nightmarish world reigns you in with sharp rocks and swirling paths, and you must glide unscathed through the tangled web to reach the next part of your journey. It's simple yet tense because just glancing against a wall can end your run. I'm not afraid to admit that I died, frequently, and after each death, I started once more, eager to fly through untouched. To Leave is more interesting conceptually than mechanically right now, though there is still a kinetic rush in flying through the air, hanging on to a door for dear life. --Tom Mc Shea

Chariot

Chariot sounds far more grim on paper that it actually is. An unnamed princess and her suitor are stuck dragging the casket of the deceased king through a deep, dark cave to find a final resting place suitable for their once noble lord. Both of these extremely dedicated pallbearers can send out a rope with the press of a button that will automatically attach itself to the casket. And, don't worry, the casket is on wheels. If it wasn't, dragging it through this 2D, puzzle-platforming adventure would be a real nightmare. Chariot is powered by a sophisticated physics engine, which means when you slip up and let the casket go careening down a steep hill and it bounces off a boulder, it likely won't land in the same place twice. Of course, if you and your partner do your jobs right this won't happen. Chariot is coming to the full range of next generation consoles, including Xbox One, PS4, Wii U, and PC. --Maxwell McGee
Thu, 01 May 2014 06:00:00 -0700 http://www.gamespot.com/articles/6-refreshing-indie-games-new-to-the-playstation-network/1100-6419339/ http://www.gamespot.com/articles/tactical-military-shooter-arma-3-getting-major-expansion-in-late-2015/1100-6419348/

Tactical military shooter Arma 3 will receive a "major" expansion in late 2015, developer Bohemia Interactive announced today as part of a lengthy blog post addressing where the game is headed in the future.

"Pencilled in for late 2015 (and with a lot of work ahead of us!) we're not quite ready to reveal too many precise details about the Arma 3 expansion," creative director Jay Crowe and project lead Joris-Jan van 't Land said. The delay caused financial hardship for Ubisoft, but it was the only possible course of action, Key says.

"This is not an easy decision to make for any company. On the day we announced that, I think our stock dropped 40 percent or some ridiculous number," Key told the [a]list daily. "We've recovered since because people are seeing the rest of our lineup and it turns out maybe it was a good idea."

"We had no choice. We knew it was the right thing to do, but it doesn't make it hurt any less" -- Ubisoft's Tony Key on the Watch Dogs delay

"We had no choice, despite the fact that it put us in a tough financial position in the short term. We're a long-term company, with a long-term vision, and Watch Dogs for us is a long-term play," he added. "We had no choice. We knew it was the right thing to do, but it doesn't make it hurt any less."

Key went on to say that games have their own unique sets of challenges, because they are a mix between technology and art. Compounding this is the fact that Watch Dogs is an all-new brand running on new technology--the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Ubisoft's other tentpole franchise, Assassin's Creed, has been annualized since 2009, so the publisher has experience bringing this product to market every fall. The same can't be said for Watch Dogs.

"The Assassin's Creed team has gotten so much experience now in working on a schedule that they've found that delicate balance of being able to put their heart and soul into the game and still making a schedule work," Key said. "But a new brand, as you've seen time and time again from publishers everywhere, it's very difficult to make that work."

Watch Dogs' delay came just one month before its then-release date of November 18. Delaying the title this late in the game led to numerous marketing challenges, Key said.

"The decision was made very late, and we were rolling along in a lot of areas on the marketing side. Any time a game slips, there are marketing inefficiencies," Key said. "We are still executing, for the most part, the plan that we had had. It was a lot of late nights and crazy reactions to putting everything on hold at the last minute. It's the least of our problems to put marketing on hold, compared to getting the game right, but it's a lot of work for a marketing team when something like that moves. You have to reallocate all your resources on a new schedule, you've got your retailers to deal with, who are already running marketing for your game in some cases. Slips like that are incredibly inefficient."

Had Watch Dogs met its original November 2013 date, the game's Xbox One and PS4 versions would have benefited from the buzz of the new consoles, Key said. But at the same time, the extra six months has also meant that more people have become aware of the game, and this is evidenced in the fact that preorders are up, Key said.

Watch Dogs launches May 27 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PS4, and PC.

"Now TV has been a great addition to the PlayStation 3 entertainment portfolio," he said in a statement, "so bringing it to the new PS4 is going to delight all users of the newest, most powerful member of the PlayStation family."

"Sky Go joining both PlayStation platforms further enhances our credentials as the ultimate gaming and entertainment package," Gara, who never misses an opportunity, added.
Thu, 01 May 2014 02:30:00 -0700 http://www.gamespot.com/articles/uk-ps4-owners-will-get-sky-go-and-now-tv-apps-from-this-summer/1100-6419343/ http://www.gamespot.com/articles/there-s-an-actual-new-wii-u-exclusive-coming-stealth-inc-2-announced/1100-6419285/

No, hell hasn't frozen over, those aren't winged mutant pigs flying outside your window, and Half-Life 3 isn't littering the bargain bins at your local GameStop. Indie developer and publisher Curve Studios is releasing Stealth Inc 2--a sequel to the critically acclaimed Stealth Inc: A Clone in the Dark--exclusively on the Wii U later this year.

"The good thing about releasing on Nintendo is, you're not competing with a lot of other people," Curve Studios' Marketing Manager Rob Clarke told Gamespot. "Even as an indie publisher we always fight with AAA for space on the storefront. With Nintendo, we know they're gonna support us. We also know that we're not having to compete with, say, Watch Dogs for example."

"Yes, there'll be [Mario Kart 8]. But because Nintendo plans its first games out so well, and they have so much control over first-party stuff, we know where we fit into its plans. It's a different experience to working with Sony, but hopefully it'll pay off."

Stealth Inc 2 sees players return to PTi Industries, but this time with full run of the facility rather than just its test chambers. New equipment is promised, as well as co-operative play via the Wii U GamePad.

With all the doom and gloom surrounding the Wii U, and with many third-party publishers pulling support for the platform, an exclusive Wii U release is a risky move, or at least one that potentially limits Stealth Inc 2's audience.

"You get a bigger share of [the Wii U's] smaller audience", game director Jonathan Biddle told GameSpot. "There are less games being released on Wii U, so we'll get more time in the spotlight."

"We're kind of relishing the idea of being on Wii U. Us being exclusive to Wii U is gonna be news, people are gonna talk about it. No one's gonna miss this fact. That's what we're hoping will make up the difference. It's also good to be on the platform that's got all these unique features. We're gonna be supporting the gamepad, and it's nice to stretch your design muscles a bit harder."

The original Stealth Inc: A Clone in the Dark was released on PlayStation 3 in July of last year, with the PC version making its retail debut as Stealth Bastard Deluxe in 2011.
