Beyond Good & Evil 2 Has Not Been Canceled, But We Won't See It Soon

Just because we have not heard much in the way of official details about Ubisoft's long-awaited adventure game Beyond Good & Evil 2 for some time does not mean the game is canceled. Ubisoft Montpellier continues to work on this "extremely ambitious project," the developer says.

"In many ways, [Beyond Good & Evil] is an inimitable game--it appeals to all generations of gamers and is an inspiration behind many of Ubisoft Montpellier's past and future games," a Ubisoft representative told Polygon. "It's still far too early to give many details about this new title."

The Ubisoft representative went on to say that Beyond Good & Evil 2 will come to "next-gen" platforms (presumably Xbox One and PlayStation 4), and that it is more ambitious in nature than what you might expect from a traditional sequel.

"What we can say is that while [25-year Ubisoft veteran Michel Ancel, who designed the original Beyond Good & Evil] and the team at Ubisoft Montpellier are working with the core tenets of BG&E, they're developing something that aspires to push past the boundaries of a proverbial sequel and leverages next-gen technologies to deliver a truly surprising, innovative, and exceptional game," the representative said. "The entire team is excited about the direction this extremely ambitious project is taking, and we'll have more to share later, as it progresses."

2003's original Beyond Good & Evil came to GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC. The sequel was first announced by Ancel in 2008, at which time he confirmed that the project had already been in preproduction for a year. Earlier this year, Ancel revealed new concept art for Jade, the game's main character.

The statement from Ubisoft about Beyond Good & Evil 2 comes after it was revealed this week that Ancel had joined game development startup Wild Sheep, where he will work on an original title alongside a team of a dozen developers. Wild Sheep is based in Montpellier, France (the same location as Ubisoft Montpellier), and Ancel's arrival at the indie studio doesn't mean he'll leave Ubisoft Montpellier.
