Here's How External Storage Works on Xbox One

Microsoft's June update for Xbox One is out now, introducing new features like external storage support and Games With Gold, as well as the ability to use your real name on Xbox Live. To help get you up to speed with the update, Microsoft has published a walkthrough video explaining what's new to the Xbox One with the update and how the new features work in real time.

For Xbox One external storage support, your external drive will need to be USB 3.0 compatible and have 256GB or more free space available on it. When you plug it into the console, the Xbox One will recognize that you've attached an external hard drive, and you'll be asked if you want to format it (you need to). You can also give your device a custom name if you want.

Once you attach an external hard drive to your Xbox One, it will become the default storage device for all new content you download. You can even more your previously downloaded content to your external hard drive if you want, so that you can bring your content to a friend's house. Up to two drives can be attached to the Xbox One at once.

The full video touches on real name support for Xbox Live, new SmartGlass features, and a new auto sign-in feature for Xbox One. Microsoft is expected to talk more about the future of the Xbox One next week during E3 2014. Microsoft's press conference takes place Monday, June 9, at 9:30 a.m. PDT.
