We all have our great cinematic failings, and this was one of mine. Well, this and the fact that I'm still able to enjoy Point Break without the slightest trace of irony. But, nevertheless, imagine my surprise when I sat down to play Alien: Isolation a little while back and managed to have a rather enjoyable time with it despite my shameful lack of familiarity with the source material.

Part of it, I think, is that Alien: Isolation feels so different. It's a first-person survival horror game that actively discourages combat. You're constantly on the run from an alien as you crawl through the gloomy remains of the Sevastapol space station. That alien hunts you by sound, so even hurried footsteps--let alone a gunshot--are enough to give away your position.

And so, you sneak. I hesitate to call it a stealth game, because in my head, I associate that genre with breaking into certain places--Shadow Moses as Solid Snake, half the foreign embassies in the world as Sam Fisher. No, Isolation is about getting the hell out. The Sevastapol has gone to pieces, and you're just trying to make it out alive as you look at that blip on your motion tracker and hope a grisly death isn't on its way.

It's different from most survival horror games, too. The fact that you aren't encountering a series of enemies but rather one persistent one who haunts you everywhere you go makes it all feel like a prolonged game of cat and mouse. Even as I encountered other humans during the game--survivors with a screw loose and an itchy trigger finger--my first thought was to sneak on by them so as to avoid conversation and the noise it would produce.

You feel uncomfortable and generally powerless, a condition that stems largely from the atmosphere. The interplay of light and shadow, the creaking of metal around you, the derelict yet lived-in condition of the place--it all adds up to a very impressive level of ambiance. But what surprised me most was the way it managed to be so creepy while still feeling like a movie from the 1970s. It's this odd case of modern video game software attempting to convey a dated idea of what the future might look like. There's the clunky CRT screen on your motion tracker, or the quintessentially 1970s brown vinyl seating of an employee dining area. Even the in-game item screen employs a retro, lo-fi choice of fonts. It's an aesthetic that really transports you back to a specific moment in cinematic history.

I was impressed. Over the years, so much of my exposure to the Alien franchise has come from first-person shooters where a gun was always your best means of survival. With its offbeat gameplay and gorgeous atmospherics, Isolation took my conceptions of the IP and turned them on their head. And so I used this as an incentive to do what any reasonable person would have done years ago: I finally watched Alien. Well, that and Aliens--just not any of the others. I'm not a madman.

And boy I'm glad that I did. Watching those two films gave me a newfound appreciation for what Creative Assembly is trying to pull off here. In a very basic way, I understood a lot more of what was going on in the story. An example: at one point toward the end of the demo, I had a tense confrontation with a synthetic whom I had awoken from a sleep state while activating a computer terminal. With his glowing eyes and measured speech strongly discouraging me from pursuing my current task, this synthetic struck a creepy chord--but he felt a little out of place. Now, having seen what happens between Ripley and Ash, I get the undercurrent of tension between humans and synthetics and the role the latter serve in the overall story.

But on a broader level, I appreciate the deviation that Creative Assembly is taking here. The developers are moving away from years of Colonial Marine power fantasies toward something that focuses on a more desperate, helpless kind of story. That said, I can already tell that this is going to be a polarizing game. The things I appreciate about a slow, measured pace and the omnipresent threat of an immediate death are the same things other people will find tedious and punishing. But I do find Alien: Isolation to be an interesting new entry in the world of licensed games. No matter how it turns out, I'm happy that this is the direction Creative Assembly is headed.
Tue, 10 Jun 2014 07:00:00 -0700 http://www.gamespot.com/articles/how-alien-isolation-helped-me-overcome-my-greatest-cinematic-shame/1100-6420075/ http://www.gamespot.com/articles/e3-2014-playing-the-villain-in-fable-legends-is-a-griefer-s-dream/1100-6420307/
Four-player co-op is all the rage at this year's E3, but like Turtle Rock's Evolve, Lionhead's upcoming Fable Legends is letting you take on the role of the villain as well as the hero. I'll confess, I'm not the biggest Fable fan out there, but its villain mode is a very different beast to the traditional Fable fare. That's not to say its regular third-person combat isn't enjoyable. Indeed, playing as the ranged character Rook, I had some fun taking on monsters with his ranged arrow attacks, and blowing them up with his explosive bolt ability while trying to co-ordinate with my co-op chums.

But it was villain mode that I found most compelling. I grew up with top-down Bullfrog games like Dungeon Keeper and Populous, and perhaps it's because there's more than a hint of those classic franchises when playing the villain that I found it so impressive. As the villain, you're given a top-down view of the map and equipped with a bunch of different units that you can send in to take down the heroes. Before each quest begins you're given a set amount of time to set up the map by placing different units and traps around it. The amount of time you're given varies from quest to quest, but in the demo I played there was just a mere 60-seconds to get things set up.

Naturally, this meant most of the units were left in their default positions. Lionhead told me that those playing as the villain in single-player mode setting up the perfect attack can save those layouts for use in multiplayer, which is a useful addition if you'd rather take your time setting things up. Once the quest begins, the heroes storm into the play area, and from there you can start sending units in to attack. I was worried that the control system might be a little finicky given that few RTS games have made the transition to console in the right way, but Fable Legends has made a few concessions for the controller.

Your four unit classes are assigned directly to the face buttons, so rather than highlight a unit to move it, you just select where you want it to go and hit the relevant button. With unit types automatically grouped together, you do lose some fine control, meaning you can only move individual classes, not units within a class. However, the system's ease of use more than makes up for it; because you can select and move units so easily, it makes for some fast-paced combat. As the heroes moved in I could easily send in a group of my melee class to surround them, while laying some suppressing fire from afar with my archers.

Holding down the right trigger launched special attacks, which needed to be charged between each use. For the melee units this meant going into a rage, dealing double damage, while the archers launched smoke bombs to confuse the team. Having been on the receiving end of those smoke bombs earlier, I can certainly vouch for just how confusing those smoke bombs made things. Another unit I had was able to launch mortars, which--when combined with the smoke bombs--did some seriously impressive damage to the heroes.

Unfortunately, launching the mortars and arrows gave away my ranged units positions, making it easier for the heroes to find them and take them down. You're given units in waves, with each wave giving you additional units, ramping up the difficulty for the heroes. Given the tactical advantage you have playing as the villain, your units have much less health than the heroes, making them relatively easy to take down once found. The key to victory was trying to separate the heroes from one another, weakening their attacking strength. Gates scattered around the map could be activated at will, letting me separate the group and concentrate my efforts on a lone hero.

With a range of smoke bombs, arrows, mortars, and the invisibility ability of one of my units, it wasn't long before I'd taken down two of the four heroes. Amusingly, this meant the remaining pair spent much of their time trying to revive them, which made them an easy target for the mortar as they stood around their fallen comrades. While they did eventually decide to stop trying to revive their teammates and come find my units, they were far too weak to take on the next wave. A few more well placed attacks later and victory was mine.

I might well have tapped into my evil side with Fable Legends. If griefing a bunch of strangers at a demo booth was this satisfying, I can't wait to find out what it's like to do it with a group of friends. This is also the first time that I've been tempted to give the Fable series a go again, something I haven't really done properly since Fable II; I do wonder whether playing against the AI is going to be anywhere near as compelling as a human player, though. But for now, this is the most impressed I've been with a Fable game in ages, and I'll certainly be hitting up Xbox Live when the multiplayer beta launches on Xbox One this holiday.
Tue, 10 Jun 2014 02:37:00 -0700 http://www.gamespot.com/articles/e3-2014-playing-the-villain-in-fable-legends-is-a-griefer-s-dream/1100-6420307/ http://www.gamespot.com/articles/e3-2014-the-best-trailers-from-this-year-s-show/1100-6420304/
If it's one thing the games industry knows how to do, it's how to cut an impressive trailer.

Whether they're full CG or all in-game, the best trailers convey their games' strengths, tell us what to expect, and most importantly ramp up the hype. Here's a selection of some of the best game trailers released so far at this year's E3.

The Division

Rise of the Tomb Raider

No Man's Sky

Dead Island 2

Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

The Crew

Bloodborne

Halo: The Master Chief Collection

Ori and the Blind Forest

See more coverage of E3 2014 →
Tue, 10 Jun 2014 00:19:00 -0700 http://www.gamespot.com/articles/e3-2014-the-best-trailers-from-this-year-s-show/1100-6420304/ http://www.gamespot.com/articles/e3-2014-uncharted-ps4-is-1080p-targeting-60fps/1100-6420305/

Uncharted: A Thief's End for the PlayStation 4 runs in 1080p, Naughty Dog announced tonight in a post on the PlayStation Blog. In a press release, Sony states that "[it] will work with its publishing partners to test various rental periods and prices, depending on how and when players would like to game." The company then says that among those different models, there will be shorter rentals priced as low as $2.99, and longer-term ones that will generally fall between $2.99-$19.99.

However, Sony makes clear that "as with all content published on PlayStation platforms, publishers and developers will ultimately decide their game price points." Further, subscription models are being tested and will likely be implemented in the future.

PS Now, Sony's streaming service for video games, allows you to play classic PlayStation games without downloading anything to your PlayStation 3, 4 or Vita system. That's because the game simply is not ready to be shown publicly, PlayStation software product development head Scott Rohde told GameSpot this evening in Los Angeles.

"It was a fun week of Last Guardian news," Rohde said with a smile, recalling the game's rumored cancellation earlier this week. Team Ico has not been forthcoming with specific plot details, but gameplay will involve the boy manipulating his companion to navigate a variety of environmental puzzles.

See more coverage of E3 2014 →
Mon, 09 Jun 2014 21:10:00 -0700 http://www.gamespot.com/articles/e3-2014-sony-will-show-the-last-guardian-when-it-s-ready/1100-6420301/
