As many of you probably remember, before the release of the Pokémon game, Game Boy had been showing slow growth, and many people wondered whether it was the end of Game Boy," Iwata said. "But the Pokémon game singlehandedly changed the landscape of the system, which then started to show the strongest sales in the lifecycle of the system."

Some of the Wii U's upcoming marquee games include Mario Kart 8 (May 30), Super Smash Bros. (2014), and an all-new Legend of Zelda game, among others. These titles could be regarded as system-sellers, but the impact they have on the Wii U's overall prospects remains to be seen. Iwata also made clear that Nintendo isn't banking on the Wii U matching the sales of the original Wii, which is one of the best-selling home consoles of all time with over 100 million units sold to date.

"As I explained back in January, it is true that we cannot draw up a good business plan for Wii U by assuming that Wii U will sell more than Wii did. Therefore, we will need to think very carefully about the balance of revenue and expenses and try to operate by controlling overall costs," Iwata said. "On the other hand, we do not believe that this year's estimate of 3.60 million units of Wii U hardware will be the peak of its lifecycle, and we would like to work hard to make sure that we give sufficient momentum to the system so that we can expect good results in and after the next fiscal year, too. However, as for this fiscal year, as I explained before, the figures you see have been determined by rather conservative estimates."

Also during his briefing with analysts, Iwata shed some light on Nintendo's mysterious upcoming NFC initiative. He said that though Activision (Skylanders) and Disney (Disney Infinity) have seen success in the toys-to-life market, Nintendo may take a different approach.

"Our primary focus, however, is not to develop software that is compatible with figurines. Rather, we have been developing figurines since last year because we believe there may be different approaches or ways to appeal to consumers by using them, and this could also be one way for Nintendo to utilize its character IP," Iwata said.

Nintendo will share more details about its plans for the "toys-to-life" market at E3 next month.

Eddie Makuch is a news editor at GameSpot, and you can follow him on Twitter @EddieMakuch

Got a news tip or want to contact us directly? Though physical media still reigns king for core gamers, a preference for digital is growing, up 5 percentage points compared to last year, the NPD Group said.

Also in the report, titled Core Gaming 2014, the NPD Group found that there are 34 million core gamers total in the United States. Microsoft representatives said in media interviews this week that removing Kinect from the bundle could free up processing power that could in turn lead to increased graphical performance.

"We are in discussions with our game publishers about what we might do in this space and we will have more to talk about soon," Microsoft executive Yusuf Mehdi told Polygon.

For the current $499 Xbox One, some portion of the system's processing power is dedicated to Kinect. A report from Digital Foundry concluded that the Xbox One reserves 10 percent of its total graphics resources for Kinect and app functionality. In an interview with Kotaku, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer said developers have told him they want to squeeze as most juice out of the console as possible, and the new Kinect-free Xbox One could be a way to do so.

"I know that developers want to get every bit of functionality out of the box that they can," Spencer said. "In conversations I'm having with our partners, that's something that's come up. We need to land the right plan there so that we've ticked off all the boxes to make sure we understand all of the long-term ramifications, but you bring up an idea and a workstream that we're focused on that makes a ton of sense. It's just about when we're ready to make those kinds of calls."

It remains to be see how Microsoft's engineers would go about such a measure, or what it would mean for the existing $499 model, which Microsoft will continue to sell.

A boost in system performance would help lessen the perception that the Xbox One is a technically inferior console compared to the rival PlayStation 4. Right now, it's not uncommon for Xbox One versions of multiplatform games to run at a lower resolution compared to the PS4 version. Just yesterday, Ubisoft confirmed that the PS4 version of Watch Dogs would run at a higher resolution than the Xbox One version, and that's hardly the first example.

The new $399 Xbox One goes on sale June 9--the same day as Microsoft's E3 2014 press conference.

Eddie Makuch is a news editor at GameSpot, and you can follow him on Twitter @EddieMakuch

Got a news tip or want to contact us directly? In all, Sony corporation made $76 billion from sales.

The results were as expected, and Sony is weathering the storm right now--it's in a period of transition, having sold off its Vaio laptop division and giving its TV people their own department.

All that work is still ongoing, too, and Sony has already warned its investors that it expects another net loss of $490m over the next 12 months. I imagine there's a lot of people with a lot of money hoping that will be the end of all the sad times as Sony, with the executive team forgoing their bonuses for the year.

But things are certainly looking strong for the PlayStation team. All in all, sales across the gaming division were up 38.5 percent, raking in a whopping $9.5 billion for the company. All that money couldn't help the gaming division shake off an operating loss of $79 million, however, which the company attributed to both the cost of launching the PlayStation 4, as well as a $60 million write-off PC titles from Sony Online Entertainment.

Sony lumps hardware sales together in its financial reports, saying that the company shifted 14.6 million PS4's and PS3's over the last year. That's slightly down from the 16.5 million it recorded for its 2012 financial year, though back then Sony included the PlayStation 2 in the figure. Sony expects to sell a total of 17 million consoles over the next 12 months.

Portable consoles aren't doing so well, however. The Vita, Vita TV, and PSP dropped for 4.1 million overall sales this year, and that figure is expected to decline to 3.5 million sales over the next 12 months.

Software sales--the real prize for Sony, which makes a tidy profit from selling games--increased to 374 million for the year, up from 266 million the year before.

Looking forward, Kaz Hirai will reveal more about the Sony corporation's long-term strategies on May 22. Its gaming division will also have a big show planned for E3 2014, of course.

Martin Gaston is a news editor at GameSpot, and you can follow him on Twitter @squidmania

Got a news tip or want to contact us directly?

"[Sony is] in many more markets right now than we are. They're in 40+ markets, we're in 13." The PS4 won't have a such a dramatic regional availability advantage for much longer, as the Xbox One will be released in Japan and 25 other regions in September.

Another reason why the Xbox One has fallen behind the PS4 in terms of sales so far is because, according to Mehdi, Xbox 360 owners enjoy their systems more than PlayStation 3 owners do, so they are less inclined to upgrade.

"People have been more satisfied with the Xbox 360 than the PS3, so in that respect people have less of a need to upgrade in the short-term due to regular updates for the Xbox 360," Mehdi said. "We could point to any number of things."

Addressing the impact the Xbox One's new $399 price point could have on the platform's viability going forward, Mehdi said the new price "broadens the appeal and hopefully brings more people to Xbox One sooner." Microsoft representatives said in media interviews this week that removing Kinect from the bundle could free up processing power that could in turn lead to increased graphical performance.

"We are in discussions with our game publishers about what we might do in this space and we will have more to talk about soon," Microsoft executive Yusuf Mehdi told Polygon.

For the current $499 Xbox One, some portion of the system's processing power is dedicated to Kinect.
