As someone who unfortunately works in retail, and lives in the wealthies county in the U.S. (Fairfax, VA, and I say this due to the VAST diversity of the area, not to brag), I can safely say that Nintendo does need to remind its potential consumers. Many of our clients do ask about what the WiiU is, and if it's just a controller for their current Wii. At our particular location, though we were VERY short on PS4s this holiday (we haven't had a shipment since Nov 22nd), we went through our WiiUs extremely quickly, and we had an over abundance. I can't say the same about our X-Box Ones, we've had over 100 sitting around collecting dust.
As for Resident Evil making a come back, I don't foresee it happening. While I do have my hopes up for Deep Down, my faith in Capcom (and many other big name publishers) has been ever so dwindling with every title they release.
