Danny, the first thing you need to do Always! is upgrade power. Then upgrade your doors so you can lock enemies into rooms and drain the oxygen out to kill them. Sensors are one of the absolute last things you ever want to get. They are pretty much useless as you will almost Always kill the ship before you can target specific enemy crew.
Also usually try to get another laser weapon and ditch the missiles. Then you can just keep whatever missiles you have to trade or sell for other stuff you may need. I'm kind of surprised that you've never beaten the game. Its not terribly difficult on the easy setting.
