House of Horrors - Silent Hill 2

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Selasa, 02 Juli 2013 | 21.50

Zorin Te, that's a nice and weird name, Chinese New Zealand or something?

I love the background around you both, very cool and Jess' t-shirt =)

I only have a couple of memories with silent hill and all of 'em are from watching a friend play them. I remember him being in a narrow and very dark corridor and as he was walking you could see monsters upside down through the grid kind of floor underneath and if you moved too quick / loud they'd follow you.

Don't know which one it was.

Bioshock 2 creative director quits to form indie studio

The creative director of BioShock 2, Jordan Thomas, has left 2K Marin after more than five years with the developer.

Speaking to GamesIndustry International, Jordan Thomas revealed that a few key moments during the development of BioShock Infinite inspired him to branch out on his own.

A designer on the original BioShock and creative director on BioShock 2, Thomas realised his true calling whilst working on Infinite, saying, "It cemented for me that while BioShock spoke to me, it'll never be for me what it is for Ken [Levine]. I've expanded that legacy here and there, but I could never have created it from scratch.

"I need to build something that is, to me, what BioShock is to Ken. No matter how long it takes, I have to start now."

Thomas has plans to start up a two-person independent game studio with an unrevealed partner, and work on a project that draws upon immersive simulation games such as Thief. The former creative director did not share specific details about his immediate plans.

2K Marin is currently working on upcoming tactical third-person shooter The Bureau: XCOM Declassified. The game's development should not be impacted by the departure of Thomas, who left the project in early 2012.

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified was first announced in 2010 as an untitled first-person shooter set in the XCOM universe. The game underwent an overhaul, and was revealed in its current state in April this year. It is currently scheduled for release on August 20 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

ThatGameCompany hints at next game

ThatGameCompany president Jenova Chen has hinted at what the developer may be working on next in a recent interview with UK publication The Telegraph.

Chen said that while the next project is still in "pre-, pre-production mode", the studio that brought arthouse games Flow, Flower, and Journey to the PlayStation 3 will continue to evolve its focus on social gaming.

"The next game after Journey is like, OK, we've done it with strangers on the internet, can this also happen among people who know each other. It's a natural evolution of everything we are doing," he said.

With the studio's three-game agreement with Sony now complete, Chen said that the team is eager to move away from publisher-funded development. In June last year, ThatGameCompany announced that it had secured $5.5 million in venture capital funding, and hoped to bring its future games to multiple platforms. Despite critical acclaim and strong sales, the company cited platform exclusivity as a factor in its financial troubles while developing Journey.

"We've made three games and have completed the contract. So from this point on, we've raised venture capital because we wanted to own IP and put it on any platform we want," he said in the interview. While Chen didn't discuss any specifics surrounding the studio's next game, he said, like all previous works, it would have broad appeal.

"Cloud and Flower are very much egocentric about my own expression, Flow is more utilitarian, and Journey is more about collaboration between various creative voices in the team. Our next game is going to be something that will relate to a wide audience on a human level. It is very exciting to see my own maturing and the team's maturing, and I'm curious to see what this next game could be."

Earlier this year, a job listing at the studio sought a scalability engineer for a "full-scale online service," which would be able to accommodate hundreds of thousands of users.

In a recent interview with FamilyGamer TV, Chen also revealed his interest in the Kinect 2.0 sensor that will ship alongside Microsoft's Xbox One console. He called out the technology's ability to capture facial expressions and subtle gestures, and is interested to see how they may be combined with gaming.

Nintendo denied Wii U domain in cybersquatting case

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 01 Juli 2013 | 21.50

Nintendo has lost a claim with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), following an attempt to take ownership of the WiiU.com domain name, according to a report by Fusible.

The case, which was filed by Nintendo of America in February this year, sought to turn over the privately held WiiU.com domain, which was originally registered in 2004; seven years before the announcement of the company's current game system in April 2011.

The verdict, which was handed down over the weekend, found in favour of the original website holder. While no information was provided on Nintendo's options or intentions to appeal the decision, the company may yet elect to attempt to purchase the domain from its current owner in a private sale.

In May this year, Microsoft began proceedings with the National Arbitration Forum to claim ownership of the XboxOne.com and XboxOne.net domains, following the announcement of its upcoming next-generation home console. The two domains were originally registered in December 2011, and are currently held by a London resident.

AU Shippin' Out June 29-July 5: Game & Wario

Fans of Nintendo's Wii U console can get their hands on Game & Wario this week, featuring a collection of minigames that utilise the GamePad controller.

Game & Wario is the latest entry to the Wario series, and, like many of its predecessors, is comprised of several minigames. The game uses the Wario games' trademark bizarre humour and integrates with the Miiverse.

The game drew criticism in GameSpot's review for its use of the "bulky Wii U GamePad as a precision aiming device", and for offering too few minigames, but saw praise for a few well-designed levels and its implementation of the Miiverse.

Fans of MotoGP racing games will be happy to hear that developer Milestone has made a return to the series with the release of MotoGP 13.

The game includes tracks, riders, and teams from the 2013 MotoGP, Moto 2, and Moto 3 World Championships. Players can choose from four single-player game modes: Grand Prix, World Championship, Career, and Time Attack.

MotoGP 13 includes commentary from international Moto GP commentator Gavin Emmett, and introduces a new helmet cam. The game will be released on July 4 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Surgeon Simulator dev squashes Half-Life 3 rumors

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 28 Juni 2013 | 21.50

Bossa Studios has confirmed that the easter egg recently discovered in Surgeon Simulator 2013 is not a tease for Half-Life 3.

"Whoa! It seems that you've got a little ahead of yourselves! Here's a clue: THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY VALVE GAMES! Carry on now…," the developer wrote on Twitter today.

Gamers this week discovered a note taped to an object with Korean text inside Surgeon Simulator 2013. The text reportedly reads "The time is," with dots said to be in reference to planets within the solar system.

"The time is 8:47 a.m." is one of the first lines in the original Half-Life.

The discovery was made following the Team Fortress 2 update for Surgeon Simulator 2013. The free update allows gamers to play as Team Fortress 2's medic and operate on the heavy.

Last April, Valve boss Gabe Newell said the studio had gone through numerous "twists and turns" to bring the game to market. He explained that Valve remaining silent on the game is in the best interest for gamers because elaborating on the game's development "would probably drive people more crazy."

The most recent Half-Life game was 2007's Half-Life 2: Episode Two. That game advances the story of previous entries Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode One. A third episode was planned, but has not seen the light of day.

A listing for Half-Life 3 was recently spotted in a Valve project tracker.

EA: Mirror's Edge sequel will "reach a bigger group of people"

The original Mirror's Edge was a fairly niche game, but its open-world sequel aims to cast a wider net. That's according to EA Labels president Frank Gibeau, who told IGN that the pieces are place for the free-running sequel to grow the franchise's audience.

"Our goal in any product is to try and grow the audience," Gibeau explained. "We're definitely taking into account the opportunity to reach a bigger group of people. We think we've got the right story and accessibility that can do that."

Gibeau added that the original Mirror's Edge sold a couple million units, so it's "not an art film." Still, he said the franchise has the opportunity to grow with the upcoming sequel.

The Mirror's Edge sequel was announced during EA's E3 briefing earlier this month. Little is known about its gameplay outside of Gibeau describing the game as an "open-world action adventure game."

The game is currently in development for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. According to developer DICE, it will be released "when it's ready."
